Harrenhal is built on a gigantic scale; its colossal curtain walls are sheer and high as mountain cliffs while atop the battlements the wood-and-iron scorpions seem as small as their namesakes when seen from the ground. From the heights of the battlements, observers can see for miles, including the lake road to the east which runs southward, as well as woods and streams flowing from the hills to the north towards the Trident.

Edmure Blackfort, accompanied by a scribe, strode the battlements looking for weaknesses in the wall, Every once in a while he would stop and dictate his observations to the scribe who would write them down. Edmure continually marvelled at the sheer scale of Harrenhal. He had heard that The Wall, far to the north, was nearly 700 feet high and that the top was wide enough for a dozen mounted knights to ride abreast. Harrenhal was not that large, but was impressive enough. It would take considerable stone for the walls to be brought up to their former strength.

Qhorin joins the man, rubbing his hands against the morning chill as he looks out over the walls. He had a little bit of a thing for heights, and while they weren't terrible... he'd prefer not to be here. But it was wide, and it worked, and it would stay strong, and it wouldn't move, and it wouldn't shake, and it wouldn't flake and drop him a hundred feet down to squish like a little... everything was fine.
He braced himself on the stone wall, and greeted the man "Castellan. I see you had the same idea as I did."

"Qhorin." he replied by way of acknowledgement. "I thought it best to begin some inspection of our defences, given that the quarry will soon be re-opened. My brother seems to think the towers need to be repaired first, but it is the walls that provide our first line of defence. It seems to me we should look at their repair first."

Qhorin shrugged and rested his hands on the battlements "I can do estimates, see what it'll cost. But until I get the gold I can't start anything, or do much. I'm focused right now on mapping the place and getting a full list of improvements. I can see that this shit" he kicks the nearest rotted siege weapon "Needs work. But I'll have to check it all."

Edmure took a close look at the scorpions placed strategically on the battlements to determine their current usefulness in defending the walls. They looked in relatively poor condition, but he needed to examine them more closely.

Qhorin walks alongside the man to the scorpions "lot of old equipment" he says "some of it shit, some not. Don't think we have the men t'use it all. But could certainly localize em if needed to where we need em. You uh, see any sieges? Real like?"

"I was at the siege of Riverrun for two years. " said Edmure a wry smile breaking out on his face ."I would say it's a good thing I won't be accompanying my lord brother when he visits shortly. I dare say I'm not too popular there."
"The walls look solid. The scorpions need to be repaired of course and we need to add to the strength of the garrison. It's only about one third of what I'd like to see. We could also use some mangonels. The ditch outside the walls could also be deepened. That will help against sappers and make it more difficult to bring up any siege engines close to the walls. A stone palisade outside the ditch is also needed. The palisade can't be too high to offer attackers shelter but high enough to slow them down while we bombard them from up here. We can use what remaining rubble we have for that. "
He turned to his scribe indicating that he should record all that, before turning back to Qhorin. "I have other ideas as well, but that will do for a start. Money is tight apparently."

Qhorin ran a hand through his hair, flummoxed by all this work going on beyond the walls. The gigantic, intimidating, no-siege-tower-high-enough walls. He didn't think it'd be useful, didn't think it'd work, and thought it probably wouldn't stop any invader as they'd just go wherever the garrison wasn't, but simply said "Yes Castellan. We'll get the labor on those while we wait for the gold to start the other projects."
After all, it was't like he'd be digging. He still had to write up the towers.

Edmure noted the doubt on Qhorin's face. He wasn't sure if Qhorin had heard of the massive siege towers of close to 140 feet in height and as wide as 70 feet and manned by two hundred men that could be used against the largest fortresses. Edmure had heard that Winterfell's inner walls were one hundred feet tall and while Harrenhal's were taller, that did not make them totally invulnerable. Edmure himself had seen the effective use of siege ramps where smaller siege towers could be used on top of siege-ramps, made of earth, rubble and timber mounds in order to overtop tall defensive walls. It would take a massive siege ramp to breach Harrenhal's walls certainly, but it was not impossible. Edmure was determined to make it as difficult as possible for that to happen.
"Don't look so concerned Qhorin. The Gods forbid you ever see the benefits of such works if Harrenhal is ever placed under siege, but they will prove effective. As the quarry isn't open for the moment, using what rubble we have combined with the sweat of our brows will have to suffice."

Qhorin hadn't survived by letting nobles into his head or letting them read his face. He stayed firmly inside his own head, and thought sourly of the shitty, wet ground if the riverlands. It sucked.
"Yes Ser. We'll get on it." He repeated, and moved on to do a assessment of repairs on the walls. They were huge but solid, so he hoped they at least weren't too bad.

Yoren walked up to the top of the battlements, a parchment of paper, and a pencil in his hands as he walked up to the top. He liked to draw, and he figured he could try and put this to use by drawing out a layout of the land, via landscapes. As Yoren got to the top, he took his first survey of the landscape as he went to begin trying to draw the picture of the lands around harrenhal, from this vantage point.

2/3/200, hour of the wolf o'clock
Dacey had gone to bed too early that night and lost sleep at an odd hour, having had trouble with it ever since she joined the war. It was far too early to do anything so she'd wandered up to the battlements, enjoying the solitude and the crisp air, finding cover for the bitter wind in one of the corners.

Jormun let out a string of varied curses as he stepped up onto the battlements, pulling his cloak tight around himself for protection against the wind. Moving to the edge of the stonework, Jormun stared down at the lands outside of Harrenhal, thinking of the hunt to come. "Hoster's goons and Edmure are so not invited."
Now he was talking to himself, he thought. Sane people do that.

Dacey was thankful for the cover until she recognized the man as Jormun. After momentarily wondering what he was doing there at this hour, she pushed herself off the wall and approached him with a genuine smile that felt a little weird on her face, as she'd not practiced one for days, maybe weeks.
"Brother," she greeted, having missed him in his rooms a couple of times over the past week. "Good to see you up and about. I take it the foot's healed fine, then?" she inquired.
