Benjen thanked Kyle and looked over at Dacey with an expression that said "are you daft?" before he burst into a smile and said, "In Braavos, of course." He took a drink of the ale and gave his compliments to the brewer with a very pleased exhale, "In all seriousness, I spent some time across the Narrow Sea in the free cities. The mercenary company I was with decided that Westeros was hardly a place for making money after the war, so we went to the Free Cities and worked as swords for hire for the various wealthy merchants." He gave a shrug, "The Braavosi know their stuff when it comes to down time, sure, but I missed Westerosi soil."
Another pause, followed by, "That, and I could never fucking understand half of what they were saying."

Dacey raised an eyebrow at that, probably not appreciating his look. "Which war was that?" she inquired, seeing as this one had only ended a month ago. "The Dance of Dragons?"
Clearly, she'd greatly underestimated Benjen's age.

"Some fuckery up North," he said, gesturing in a vaguely northward direction. "Less of a war than a bunch skirmishes between houses. Had to keep my head low during that time, lest the Old Man find me again." This much was true. There had been quite a bit of unrest northward, and Benjen was never one to shy away from profit

"Your father?" she assumed, not really buying his war tale, but letting him continue nevertheless, all the while wondering how big he was going to spin this web.

"No other," he said, and left it there. He took another sip of ale and glanced over at her. "I have to ask, though. You're now a lady of a noble house. Why do you feel the need to continue hunting and scouting instead of putting your feet up on a settle and kick back?" It was an honest question, one that he hoped she had a decent response for. After all, most lords and ladies he knew would rather be in a feasthall than on a scouting mission.

Dacey thought about it for a moment. It seemed like that option hadn't even crossed her mind until his question.
"I'm good at what I do," she said, stating it as fact rather than trying to sound arrogant. "And because I can. How many noble ladies can say the same?" she asked.

"However many can put an arrow between a man's eyes from a hundred yards, I suppose," Benjen conceded with a chuckle, "As of late, I only seem to know the one." He finished his ale and called for another, pondering a story to tell.
Eventually, he came up with one.
"Have you ever heard of the land of Asshai?" he asked, curious about her response.

Dacey realized she hadn't even touched her drink.
"I've heard it mentioned in passing," she replied, knowing only enough about it to relate it to sorcery. "Are you going to tell me you've been there, too?"

"No, actually," he responded. He'd never been further south than Norvos when it came to the continent across the Narrow Sea. "A few months back, I wound up working with a man from that city when I was guarding caravans to and from King's Landing. Really strange guy. Had a love for turnips like you wouldn't believe. He found them fascinating for some reason or another. Never really occurred to me that Turnips were a rarity in Asshai, but apparently they were."
He took a drink of his beer and continued, "Still. Have you ever pondered that Westerosi weather would be considered "too bright"? Even this far north? Because, apparently, Volundru thought so."

"Was he really from there, or was he like you?" she asked with half a smile, sipping some of her water.
"Perhaps in some parts. The clouds never seem to leave Harrenhal, though. Could be it's winter," she said. "What was this man doing here, then?"

Benjen conceded the possibility that Volundru could have been a massive liar with a simple nod, though there was one thing that served as damning evidence of the man's origin. "I really doubt that a man that red of hair and that pale of face could be from anywhere in Westeros. It probably rules out most of the free cities, too. As for why he left, I never asked. Though I believe he left Asshai for the same reason that many men leave home." He took another sip of his ale before he finished, "To run from something."

"Ever met a Tully?" she asked, the delivery of her joke rather dry. "What do you know about this land? A city, you said?" she inquired.

Kyle comes by to refill their drinks and hear the story of no doubt complete truth. Bar keepers can smell a storyteller a mile away, but if they're creative they're at least good for business. He pours a small glass of red liquid for the lady and offers it. "On the house, m'lady," he said. "Unfermented grapes from Ryamsport at the Arbor."

"I have not met a Tully, no," Benjen responded, watching her carefully and wondering what she had planned up her sleeve. She was either setting up to have a massive "fuck off" sign hung on her forehead, or she was telling a story, herself. "Though, from some of the responses I've heard from people that supposedly have, I don't know whether it would be considered a pleasure or a displeasure."

"It was a joke," she said, seeing as he'd simply ignored her question about Asshai. "You mentioned red hair."
She looked at the barkeep and the drink he'd poured her. He was probably sensing a bad tinder date so instead of a "If I wanted a drink, I would've ordered it", she drank up. The glass was, after all, small.
