"I have nothing to forgive," he smiled, still looking a bit stunned. "I have just never been the impulsive type. I agonize over every decision, dissect it. Father says it makes for a good lord but my uncle always said it would make for a poor knight. I suppose I do not have to worry about the latter anymore."

She kept her hand on his.
"Not every man can be a knight. You're to be a lord, and that is much more important. You will have all the knights of the Riverlands at your command, one day. I wonder how many of those would make a decent lord? Not many, I would guess."

"A good lord should be both," he replied, clearly speaking of something he had read on political theory. "It is a poor lord who asks his subjects to do something he is unable or unwilling to do himself."

"So shall you lead your knights to war then, even though you're not a knight?" She asked.

"I would have to lead from the rear if I did," he replied, not really answering the question.

"There's nothing wrong with that," she said. "You would still be giving the orders.. Better that than hide behind these great walls, I suppose. But I thank the gods I won't ever have to make those decisions myself."

"Or any decisions in general," Tristan remarked, with a wry smile. "Is that the sort of life you envy? One in which you have no control of anything save the dress your wear?"

She laughed delicately. "Oh, maybe a little more than that but I wasn't trained to make the important decisions a lord has to make. But I intend to have a say in my eventual marriage, certainly."

"And where is it you intend to have a say?" he prodded, seeming genuinely curious.

"Oh, well, if I were to have a preference for a particular man, I intend to see that I marry him. And of course I would wish to be involved in the running of my husband's castle and the upbringing of my children. That's not so unusual, surely?"

"No, it's not," he agreed, with a small laugh. "As long as you don't propose trading said castle for dresses."

"Oh, not at all," she agreed, laughing as well. "I meant only that I would not like it if I had a man's responsibilities. But I'm not likely to be in that position so it doesn't matter at all."
She stood. "Shall we press on, or would you like to go inside?"

"Alas, the heart is willing, but the body is not as able as it once was," he admitted, massaging his aching leg. "At think that is all the physical exertion I have in me for the day."

"Of cousre. Can I help you up?" She held out a hand. "I won't tell, I promise. But I hope I may consider you a friend, Tristan.
