I'll be honest, I volunteered for shit all the time because it makes the day go faster. Otherwise it can be like mind numbing lay boring haha.

I wish. We get priority advancement, but no auto ranks.

Huh, pretty sure that's changed since I got out. They had guys making chief in like six years back then.

Chief in 6 years would actually be pretty slow for a CT field if I made E3 in training

Ehhh, depends on promotion rates. And then they don't even matter completely for making chief, it's all up to the board then.

True, but I'd imagine making your promotion exams each time would give you a good foot in.
Or so I hope. I like money.

It's a start. But they like leadership experience. And leadership positions tend to go to people with more time in. It's rare to see a first class with only five or six years in get made an LPO. Which makes sense - who do you want in charge of your junior sailors? Someone who was a junior sailor, like, yesterday? Or someone who's been around for a bit and knows how the Navy works?
That said, if you're shit hot, then it can be and has been done.

1. Sorry for the absence the last few days, gang. Class is starting up again tomorrow and apparently assigning massive amounts of reading before the class has even met is a thing. Just when I think law school can't get more sadistic. Anyways, I'm going to roll the archery contest now and knock out the melee over the next day or two. Those waiting for tags, thank you for your patience.
2. Kick ass at basic Drak! You will be missed until then. I think I speak for everyone when I say we're very proud of you not being a useless twat. Alright, now that the sentimentality is out of the way I can't promise I'll actively play Jormun much, as unlike some admins, I don't really feel comfortable trying to do someone else's character justice. Despite best efforts, I find it never really feels right. That said, if there's a fight he should be at, I'll be sure to roll him, as well as be sure to give you monthly hunting rolls to give the house a chance to get extra food.
3. I forgot to wish you guys a happy 7 months....so happy 7 months. 2 more and we'll have outlasted Dragons.
4. Last, but not least, my schedule for the term is pretty amazing, so I should be free to post most days until exams are upon me in May. I have classes almost the entire day Monday and Wednesday, but big chunks of free time between them in the middle of the day. Then I have a class from 2-4 on Tuesday. I have no classes Thursday or Friday, so 4 day weekend! Yes, I'm a scheduling genius.

I likewise feel uncomfortable portraying another player's character.
Some quick advice for Basic.
1) You will do a lot of folding, marching, and bedmaking. The instructors don't care anymore than you about these things. They're testing to see how well you can understand instructions and follow them.
2) The instructors you meet are putting on a performance. They don't have it in for you. They're yelling at you so when someone screws up, everyone hears the correction and adjusts.
3) Every group has that one guy who is slower, whether on the track or in catching on. These people aren't (usually) idiots. Not everyone adjusts as quickly as everyone else. I was definitely the runt of my basic training flight, but I kicked ass in technical school and the field. You are going to want to help this person though, because the Navy and Air Force both emphasize the group mindset.
4) It is almost impossible to actually flunk out of basic, despite how it will seem. People are usually seperated from the armed forces for strictly medical reasons.
5) Take advantage of religious services on Sunday. You will want a vacation from the dorm.
