The old woman gave a derisive laugh as if that were the funniest thing she had ever heard in her entire long life. "Been in danger for the last five years," she answered. "Town has been sacked twice in the war, first by the Reds, then by the Blacks." Violet did her best to look resolute. "That's a pity, and my heart bleeds for your people, but we're here to stop the town being sacked in the future. "The war is over, and it's time to heal and rebuild. My brother can't change the past but he will make sure your people are protected. But we need you - the townspeople - to work with us. We need to know about these Whents, who they are and what they want."

"You think them highborns like you spend much time talking with us in the shadow of the keep?" the woman asked, lumping in the proper speaking Violet with the rest of the bluebloods. "Know that Simon Whent can burn in the seven hells. Tore my grandson straight from my daughter's breast on the lady's orders." She spat.

Violet gasped in horror. ""But why? That's horrible, truly. A young child shouldn't be separated from its mother."
She wondered if there was any chance the boy still lived, but thought it unlikely.
"What happened to your daughter?"

"She could have been trying to retain her youth," Saesha said, about the children's disappearance, not giving any explanation as to why she might think that.

"What happened to your daughter?" The old woman grunted at the first bit, as if that were an obvious sentiment. "Same thing that will happen to the rest if things continue as they are. Buried her in a plot behind the inn with an empty belly. Husband of hers went in the keep with the others."

She asked. "It might be important."

"A few days, though feels like months. Hard to judge time when you rarely see the sun in the shadow," she replied, shaking her head.

Violet bit her lip as she considered her next words . "Have you heard from the men since they went? Are your people struggling since the men left?"

"Were struggling before, struggling now," the woman replied, too old and too jaded for some highborn twat's questions. She had moles older than violet.

As it was unlikely the scouting group would return until the evening, Ser Valarr offered the lord and his family lodging in Harrentown's largest and most lucurious in, simply called Alucard's Rest.

After stepping outside the inn, Violet started across the road but quickly began to have doubts about her decision. She didn't know the people and though she did want to do something useful. Beginning to wonder if she'd made the right decision, she also realised that she couldn't just walk back into the inn without looking a fool. She would have to at least walk around the town a little before going back inside.
She looked around to see if there was anybody in the street who seemed in need of assistance.

Hoster and his men had to give a little sprint in order to catch up with the girl. He had thought of giving the girl some distance, let her explore alone for a while, but soon changed his mind. It was cold out here and his drink was almost over, he was hungry and tired from the scouting mission, his mood was not about to improve if she got into trouble. "Yer brother told me ta keep an eye on ye. Fer yer safety, m'lady."

I can't just sit around in the inn while all you men do the work. I was hoping to try and help the people. Our hostess doesn't need any help, so I thought I'd see if anyone else does.. I feel so...pointless right now. I can't fight, and the people know it. But what else can I do? All I can do is try to help them in other ways, if they will let me?"

Hoster sighed... Yup, it was a matter of time before this young one got herself killed. Doing good to people you never know was never a good idea unless they paid for it, then it was ok.
"Ah kno' there ain' no use in tryin' ta change yer mind, Violet. But ah gonna try it anyway... " Hoster said, trying to mask his annoyance. He could picture a steaming bowl of squirrel soup warming his hand, hopefully, the prick would be back soon with the food. "It's gettin' dark out here, let's just go back to the inn, eh? Wai' fer da Huntin' party, hav' a meal 'fore goin' ta bed. Ye can help da folk ano'er time, I'll came back wi' ye in da afternoon tomorrow, after we settle in Harn'hal."

"It would be good to eat. truly. I'm not even sure I can help the people, but I feel obliged to try. We rule their lives now. Or we will, Seven be willing. But what can I do? I told the innkeeper I was going to help this one man. I will look like a fool if I go straight back."
