"I follow the Faith," Nyles affirmed. To an extent at least. "I feel hopeful the gods decide I may serve best by being a knight." He looked to Joffrey Hightower and then to the Grand Maester. "I've seen people act like beasts in the fields as well as cities," he said, "but if you kill someone or do your most vile acts...and no one else is around to witness, does that make it less evil?"

"No. But if anyone sees the act, and does nothing, then they are almost as culpable. That's why a city is inherently more corrupt, Nyles. We learn to accept that whoring and corruption and exploitation is part of our daily life, and that is the opposite of what the Seven demand from a knight. We are meant to be shining example of what a man can be. Not what a man may find convenient to be." Neither of the Hightowers contradicted, perhaps because it was a bad idea to contradict a powerful man when he's talking about religion.

The squire nodded. With how difficult it could be to get food he had trouble finding too much disgust for whores. If his family's meteoric rise to power had never happened his sisters wouldn't have been far from the fate. "It seems to me the gods allow such cities so that they can know their true followers, those who can act with virtue in the presence of corruption. Any of us may be good when it is easy, yes? We cannot make others pure, only show them a path." He tried remembering his old septon's talks. "If the city watch is so corrupt perhaps His Grace can find someone who is more reliable to run them. No king should live in a city where he doesn't trust his own warriors."

Except Alford here, who has sat every Small Council meeting since Baelor the Blessed was king. How are you still alive, old man?" "Can't die yet, Lord Reyne. Too much unfinished business to just let it all go." "That's the spirit! And you, O Master of Laws, why don't you take the young man's suggestion and clean up this city?" Scowl DCIVII popped out. "Thank you for your legal advice, young man. Thirty years experience ruling of Oldtown and you have shamed the entire Citadel already."

Nyles has dove too far to stop now. "No offense has ever been intended, my lord. The kingdom knows how great Oldtown is compared to the capital." He isn't going to make friends anyway, what the hell. "It is hard to understand the struggles on the ground when we can sit so high above."

For the first time, the Master of Laws actually looked at Nyles, studying the young man. Finally, he said, "I have no use for knights. A knight is a trained killer who mistakes an inflated sense of self with a noble cause. A man who thinks because he spent one night in a Sept, he is inherently superior to men who are not. And I have hung hedge knights by the score because they raped and murdered and pillaged among farmers who were truly contributing something to their kingdom. And most of them thought I was somehow treading on their honor and title."
He pointed a spoon at Nyles. "That is the ordinary truth."

Nyles can't argue most of the point, but he nodded respectfully. "If it please my lord, the Knights you sent to hang the hedge knights seem to be doing the kingdom a service. A vow only has the strength of the man it comes from."

A vow only has the strength of the man it comes from." Hightower raised an eyebrow. "If the vow is only as good as the man who gave it, then of what value were the words spoken?" He began to stand up. "You're a bright young man, Nyles Blackfort. I hope you make a better knight than the ones I usually see."

"I hope to not disappoint you," Nyles said. "But if I do I'll be sure to return and inform you that you were right about us."

Quite... some amount of time after the events of the Sept, Ser Harlan strode into the Great Hall to attend court, wearing his best grey-green doublet. He was off duty for the moment and hoped to see the Lady Myrcella there so as to inquire about her health; he felt partially responsible for the wound she'd received at the riot. Still, he'd not visited her chambers at an earlier date lest someone get the wrong idea about his intentions.

Among the crowd, she saw Lord Reyne in his crimson clothes standing with the Master of Laws, Lord Hightower. Harlan also recognized Ser Sebastian Florent, who had been so friendly in the Great Sept, and his wife Dany, who had been with Myrcella. Harlan doesn't see the young lady herself, who is likely still recovering in her quarters.

Deciding to wait until Lord Reyne had concluded his conversation with Lord Hightower, Harlan made his way over to the couple. "My lady," he greeted with a respectful bow, "Ser Sebastian. I trust you are well, including your daughter?" he inquired, sounding like he genuinely cared. The last part of the question was of course aimed at Dany.

"Of course." Dany smiled at the sworn shield. "And I must thank you for helping shield Myrcella and Alice in the Sept. I have few enough friends in King's Landing without them getting gutted in public."

"I'm glad you're well," said Harlan, returning the smile even though he felt a little bad about it now. "I wish I could've done more, but alas. I trust this situation will be dealt with soon enough so you and your friends can be safe in this city." He considered this a moment before correcting himself. "Safer."
