Character History:
His Story
A running theme with most people that talk to Benjen is that nobody knows his true story aside from himself. He always keeps some parts the same: Born as the bastard of a Northern lord, traveled south, fought and kept winning, then came to Harrenhall to serve the Blackforts. The in-betweens are a little bit fuzzy, as he changes the story from time to time. Sometimes, the group that took him south were peddlers, other times they were mummers. One rendition he tells when he's deep in his cups is that he lashed together a raft made of salmon using the hides of bears as rope in order to cross over the river without using the Twins. What his tongue spins in lies, however, his sword spins in truth. While he is not the strongest fighter on the battlefield, he is tall and lanky, with a rather impressive reach and nimble speed that allows him to use his long reach to his advantage. He has handled himself in many a singular duel, even going toe to toe with Valemen in peacekeeping expeditions along the edge of the Riverlands. As always, any stories he tells about these fights result in people having a hard time figuring out whether he's telling the truth. Honestly, he prefers it that way. He doesn't care whether or not people believe him. Lord Blackfort is a damn good boss, and he pays just fine.
The Real Story
He was born as a bastard to Lord Olyvar Bolton, and learned the sword at the Dreadfort. In addition to showing skill with the blade, he also showed prowess regarding scouting and foraging, which he discovered quickly when his father (sometimes intentionally) left him out in the middle of the woods after a hunting expedition in order to make his way home. This allowed him to gain experience that would make him a notable scout leader during the Blackfyre War. After one particularly nasty abandonment by his father at the age of 17, he made his way South, figuring that was the last straw, and joined up with a group of hunters that went to the north to collect wolf pelts. After crossing the Twins, however, he kept going, figuring that he would try to make his fortune in the service of a noble house. Eventually, he enlisted in the service of Lord Blackfort just before the outbreak of the Blackfyre War. During that time, he led a party of scouts and raiders in small hit-and-run attacks on the enemy encampments during the Kingswood Front. After the battle, he continued to fight for Lord Blackfort, viewing the man as a better lord than his father ever was.
Physical Description: Though he has listed himself as a Mormont, Glover, Reed, and even a Stark at one point, he notably avoids the house that fits his lanky, angular features: Bolton
Reputation: Benjen has a proclivity for telling tall tales (hence his nickname), and he's gotten quite convincing at it over time. He's able to spin a yarn five miles long and defend himself if the story manages to piss someone off.
Boon: Too Big to Believe or Too Great to Ignore?-When Benjen tells a tall tale to NPCs, he will get a persuasion roll in order to convince them to believe it. On a success, he will receive a bonus to all combat and social against said NPC or NPCs. The difficulty of the roll and bonus will be determined by the tallness of the tale.
Curse: Wounded Pride- Whenever Benjen fails a persuasion roll in pursuit of convincing an audience of the veracity of his tall tale or someone is able to poke a hole in said tale, he will suffer a Wound (to his ego) that will be determined by how badly he failed the roll. The penalty to wound taken in such a manner will effect combat as well as social rolls.
