"Some recommend self-flagellation, though I wouldn't do it, personally. Perhaps acts of charity would be for the best. You can hardly help the dead." He knew better than to suggest that the tortured septons would still be alive. "Fear not, I know well that unsavoury things happen during war, but best keep such deeds quiet in future. I would so hate to see you arrested for crimes against the Faith."

Ethan chuckled. "That's a long word," he said. "If half the stories of this place I've heard are true....well, let's just say I won't be fearing my meager little sins being the ones people notice."

"There is that," Jared murmured. "Lady Lothston's sins were blacker than most, from what I've heard. But still, this is peace time now and men give more thought to law and order in such time. And that's all to the good. The common people should be safer now than before."

"We can hope, but a strong lord can bring as much pain as a cruel one," Ethan said. "Particularly if his neighbors are not inclined to play along."

"Perhaps so, but I had rather serve a lord who protests his people than one who hurts them. It is my dearest hope that Lord Belric becomes a true protector to the people who were so badly wronged by Lady Lothston. But it would hard to be worse than her, truly."

"HAs it ever occurred to you, dear septon," Ethan said, looking about, "that the only thing lords protect people from...are other lords?"

"Bandits too," Jared pointed out. "I've fought my fair share of those. Though you're right, of course. Most wars are just some pissing contest between two lords."

"None yet." Willem replied. He glanced at Jormun, pausing before he answered the latter's comment. "I imagine some would. With a war there's always work for the willing. In peace, well, not always." "There is work for the willing in peace, it just takes more than swinging a sword. A bad time to be an unskilled knight, certainly." Jormun shook his head. "With too many of those, situations like the Crossing happen."

"For knights perhaps." Willem responded. "For the smallfolk too though? Often I think not."

"Peasants can't afford an army, or to be away from their fields. Only the rich can wage war. And bandits are caused primarily by...war, or the lack of it." He shrugged. "But war keeps me employed. If the gods wanted to stop it, either they cannot or they have o desire to. Either way..." he let his voice trail off. "Are you celibate, septon?" He pointed to some farm girls about. "Do the Seven make a girl's figure seem less tempting to you, or more?"

"Neither more nor less than they did before I took vows," he replied earnestly. "I never was interested in girls, anyway. But I've learned that a vow of celibacy does not deter all men from baser urges. I always did prefer drinking and fighting to the bedchamber, though." He paused. "Do not let my lack of interest in female flesh deter you, if you are looking for company tonight. You never know, you might get to bed two together, if you ask nicely."

"I probably could," Ethan said. "You're a strange man, septon, even by rather lax standards." He chuckled. "Who has your coin for winning the Melee?"

"For knights perhaps." Willem responded. "For the smallfolk too though? Often I think not." "It is better to play at war than to fight in it," said Dacey, referring to the tourney. "For knights and smallfolk alike. Are you joining the horserace, Ser Willem? I think I saw a sign-up tent earlier."

"There's to be a horse race?" Willem said with a surprised look. "I must have overlooked it. Yes I ought to participate. I might have a chance of doing well."
He paused. "And will the two of you be taking part in any events?"
