Character History:
Edwyn Blackfort was born in Pentos the son of a Westerosi wine merchant, Jon Blackfort and his wife Alia Narratys, a Pentoshi lady of one of the forty families from which the Prince of Pentos was chosen. Given a Westerosi name at birth, Jon Blackfort taught his son about Westerosi life and lore as he grew up. Edwyn’s early life with his sister was happy with both of his parents clearly in love with one another. At 13 years of age, Edwyn’s life changed forever when his father disappeared for reasons unknown. His mother was clearly devastated and despite Edwyn’s fears that his father had been murdered, his mother assured him that it was not so and that he had gone south. When pressed why, she would never answer him. The successful wine business that his father had founded and built up was allowed to wither. Luckily for young Edwyn and his mother and sister, they were taken in by Alia’s brother, Nevio Narratys, with a promise to bring them up as if they were Nevio’s own. As the price, his sister was forced to give Nevio a controlling share of her missing husband’s business. For the next three years, Edwyn and his sister lived under their uncle’s roof, with Edwyn being educated in the ways of business, and on several occasions visiting Westeros in the company of his uncle, where the Blackforts were at this point unknown. When in Pentos, Edwyn ran wild with his friends in the streets learning the art of unarmed combat and becoming skilled with small blades and a rudimentary knowledge of a larger blade.
Upon his 15th nameday, the reaching of manhood and two years after his father disappeared, Edwyn's mother Alia presented him with a belated gift from his father, a silver signet ring with engraving upon it that he later realised was Valyrian. She had told him that it had belonged to his grandfather Robert and had been gifted to his father Jon upon his deathbed. Edwyn had never forgotten her words. "Your father told me that Bruce received the family lands and title, Hoster the family sword, Richard the family horse and he got a bloody ring." She had seized Edwyn's chin and looked closely into his face. "He told me that if you ever need kinsmen, then go to Harroway's Town and find your father's family. You look enough like your father for his family to recognise, but this ring will help." Edwyn had taken the distinctive ring with the family arms on it and the initials 'JB' and had worn it on a chain around his neck, the only reminder he had of his father.
As Edwyn grew older, his ageing, childless uncle devolved more responsibility to him, with the young Edwyn leading several caravans both to the other Free Cities and increasingly to Westeros. As a result the young man had developed some ability in commanding men, although only in small bands, as well as logistics and organisation, but it was finance where he truly excelled. In Westeros he goes by the name Edwyn Blackfort, but he's also widely known in the Free Cities by his mother’s family name as Edwyn Narratys. Still, most nobles in Westeros would not know who he was, although if they have tasted Pentoshi wine there was a good chance it was from the Narratys' business.
Given the recent rise of his family to one of the greatest lordships in the Seven Kingdoms and his own semi-permanent relocation to the land of his father’s birth, to represent the family business, Edwyn decided to adopt Blackfort as his proper and permanent name. After all he reasoned, he was a Blackfort by birth and only a fool would deny kinship to one of the greatest Lords in the Seven Kingdoms. And perhaps, through the reach of his new-found family, he might, finally, learn the whereabouts of his ten-year missing father.
Physical Appearance:
Thanks to his mother’s Eastern heritage, Edwyn is taller and darker than his father, Jon who was a short and unassuming man. Edwyn is always to be found in leathers. He generally sports a close-trimmed beard that protects his skin from the Essosi sun and the cold that a Westerosi winter brings. However that ages him more than what you would expect for a man of his relatively youthful years. However his facial features are the spitting image of his father as a young man and anyone who knows the Blackfort family would immediately notice the similarities. Edwyn is always clad in leather armor and carries a sword, largely for show. However the three daggers he carries at all times at his belt, one behind and one either side can be used with deadly effect, should his own person be threatened.
