Barley was born as the youngest child of the local Wise Woman and some random man she never knew. She grew up watching her mother work and as such got to know a lot about herbal medicine. How to find the plants and forage for them, how to mix them and how they were best used.
One day the son of one of the local farmers was badly injured and sensing an opportunity Barley's mother promised to help the lad should the father agree to marry him to her daughter when he was well.
The remedies worked, the young man got better and he and Barley got married. The two of them were happy with one another, but the farmer was not. Bitter that his eldest son had been forced to marry such a lowly outcast the farmer treated Barley very badly, often being physically abusive to her. Her husband didn't have the will to stop his father, and so their marriage declined into bitterness as well.
After being married into the family for five years and producing no children (which only served to make the farmer more angry) the bandits came and robbed the farm resulting in the death of Barley's husband. The Farmer was strong and fierce and took out a couple of the bandits, before holing up in the farmhouse where the money the family kept was hidden and defending it with a bow.
Sensing a chance to be free, Barley killed the farmer and made a deal with the bandits to let her go should she open the door and give them the money, but after she helped patch some of them up, and seeing how she was at least partly skilled at healing the then leader offered her a place with them, which she accepted.
Since joining up with the group Barley has kept more the the shadows than most, staying on the fringe instead of participating directly in much fighting. She tends to break into buildings while people are distracted and rob them. If they pillage a farm she always burns it down if she can, like the farm where she was a prisoner for so long.
She was also imprisoned briefly for almost inciting a riot at a farmers market, but quickly escaped.
