Character History:
Ser Richard was the second son of a household knight of the Lothstons. All his life, his goal was to be like his father, a loyal knight to the house that provided for them. He paid scarce attention to his lessons, picking up little more than the basics of reading and writing, the details of history he was taught with some of the other children of house Lothston's servants passing largely in through one ear and out the other. But while he floundered in his formal education, he excelled in the training yard against the other children his age.
He was allowed to squire for one of the other knights at the age of ten, and carried out his duties admirably. At the age of nineteen he reached the quarter-finals of a smaller regional tournament and won his spurs. As a knight, Ser Richard took up a place amongst the household knights of the Lothstons he had looked up to as a child. He served the Lothstons for twelve years before the war, earning a reputation of a man who could be relied upon to rid the country of bandits and other problems. While word circulated of Ser Richard's brutality, this did not appear to concern Lady Lothston. When sent to eliminate enemies of order in the God's eye, Ser Richard always delivered. Ser Richard seemed to take great pleasure in this work, and was rarely found at regional or local tournaments after winning his knighthood. He much preferred to protect the holdings of the Lothstons while others parted in search of glory.
When House Lothston answered the call of Daemon Blackfyre, Richard was sent with a small force to raid the lands of Lords Harlton and Smallwood. Richard's tactics were ruthless. The smallfolk of the Targaryen supporters were put to the sword, and their homes burnt to the ground in an effort to keep the knights of the reds confined to their own lands searching for Richard. Knightly honour counted for less with Richard than loyal service to House Lothston. Richard's small force was hunted throughout the war, and gradually dwindled as men were lost during raids, starvation, illness, and desertion.
When word reached Richard that House Lothston had betrayed Daeron, Richard and what few men remained of his force of raiders parted from the lands of their new allies. On reaching Harrenhal they found it besieged by a greater force than they could relieve, and Harrentown sacked. So Richard directed his men to the land of the nearest Blackfyre supporter, Lord Roote, and set about unleashing the same savagery on the smallfolk there they had employed in Smallwood and Harlton's lands. This was less successful, as at this point Richard's force had dwindled to the size where they could do little more than burn down isolated homes and hang small families from nearby trees.
When word reached Richard that the war was over, he returned to Harrenhal, where he found the siege remained underway. He directed his men to harry the foraging parties of the besiegers, when Ser Richard heard from one captured man he had tortured for information that the Lady Danelle had been killed by Ser Bruce Whent he was apoplectic with rage and cut the man's throat on the spot for presuming to tell such a tale. When other captives confirmed it, Ser Richard's band fell apart. His few remaining men deserted that night, the war over and their Lady dead. Ser Richard did no such thing. He would avenge this murder that the Blakfyres and their supporters had orchestrated, and he would do it the only way he could. By making their smallfolk suffer, burning their crops, and making the merchants fear to travel their lands.
Ser Richard began in the High Lordship of the Bay of Claws. There over the course of five months he managed to kill five travelling merchants, a hedge knight he found sleeping in the bushes who confessed to having served the blacks after torture, and a significant number of smallfolk. He always carved a crude bat on the faces of his victims (or an intact part of their body if their head had been too mangled by his mace), and on one occasion let a husband in a family live to carry word of his purpose back to Lord Lucamore Roote. He favored letting the man live over the wife and children as he hoped it would make the smallfolk louder in their calls for justice and more frustrated when he was not apprehended. He survived off what he hunted, and what he was able to steal from his victims.
When knights were dispatched to hunt him down, he moved north to the High Lordship of the Trident. There he continued his indiscriminate killings of smallfolk, and on finding an isolated inn burnt it to the ground and killed many of the patrons as they tried to escape. In the Lordship of Wycombe two of Lord Lewy's knights managed to track him down, but Ser Richard was able to kill both of them and flee toward the High Lordship of South Shore.
