Character History:
Jon Blackfort was born the third son of Ser Robert Blackfort in the year 153AC, the very same year that the last Targaryen dragon died. For most of his childhood Jon was the smallest of the Blackfort boys and frequently fell victim to the bullying Bruce and the hostile Hoster. Never the fighter like his brothers were, Jon was more content to play imaginary games by himself. In some he was Florian the Fool, in some he was the young King Daeron and in others he was even the great black dragon Balerion! He would fly into Lord Harroway’s Town and burn Bruce and Hoster and everyone else that dared to get in his way. That would stop them calling him “Shortfort.”
When Richard was born, Jon no longer held the prized position of youngest child in the Blackfort household, and found himself further estranged from his family. While his brothers took to swordplay, fighting and street crime; Jon much preferred to read, a talent that his mother had endeavoured to teach him.
Expecting no inheritance and with no talent to become a knight, Jon convinced his father to send him to the Citadel to train to be a Maester. Here he dreamed that he would one day chronicle the great histories of the Targaryen Kings and Queens and that King Baelor would invite him to court in exceptional gratitude, where he would serve as the wisest Grand Maester in the history of the Seven Kingdoms. However, these dreams proved as ungrounded as Jon’s childhood fantasies of being as a dragon. He was a difficult student and it was not long before he was expelled for his disruptive behaviour. Not wanting to return to Harroway, Jon remained in Oldtown whilst charading that he was still a student of the Citadel. He worked various jobs to get buy including a year spent as an apprentice cobbler. Eventually growing tired of this also, Jon returned to Harroway though the excitement of Oldtown clung to his memory.
Upon returning home, he brought with him a written document that praised Jon’s expertise in a great many fields of knowledge. This parchment was very clearly signed by the Grand Maester himself and with this as verifiable and very reliable proof, Jon persuaded Lord Roote that he should make a good and able assistant to his Steward. Whether the Lord of Harroway was convinced by the alleged word of the Grand Maester, or simply acted as a favour to Jon’s father, the Blackfort boy was hired on the spot. For several years Jon acted in his role as assistant Steward to Harroway, learning the trade of coin as his brothers learnt the sword.
Yet Oldtown had shown Jon a brighter world, far grander and more interesting than shady Harroway. In his 24th year, and three days’ shy of the future Lord Belric’s third birthday, Jon left Harroway and set sail for Essos. He managed to gain employment helping to manage stage shows in Braavos, before moving on some months later to Norvos. Here he worked as a moneylender, but that too came to pass. It was in Pentos that he established himself as a wine merchant of local renown, and it was in Pentos that he met the light of his life, Alia. She was unlike any woman Jon had ever met, her voice like honey, her laughter like wine, and her eyes like black opals that glittered when they caught the candlelight. Fifteen long and good years they spent together as man and wife, raising both a son and daughter.
What ended these peaceful years is a matter of question. At the time, rumors circulated that Jon Blackfort had killed a man that had insulted his finest vintage. Jon himself does not dwell on the subject. Whatever the truth, Jon Blackfort left his life in Pentos behind, and headed south.
Seeking to find a new life (or perhaps to end his current one) Jon bought his way into a sellsword company called the Daring Dogs. At first many of the Dogs jested at the prospect of a man who could barely swing a sword joining their ranks, but their enigmatic captain Kazdan the Blue recognised the value a skilled paymaster served such a company of men. It did not take long for the rest of the Dogs to come to heel to the man that paid them.
During the Blackfyre Rebellion, The Daring Dogs were on contract with Lys, fighting a petty war with Tyrosh in the Disputed Lands. For the most part these wars usually only involved small skirmishes and were reputed as easy coin among the sellswords of Essos. But events came to a head at the Battle of the Black Moors. The Daring Dogs and their Lyseni allies faced off against a superior Tyroshi force, consisting of three sellsword companies. The night before the battle an emissary of Tyrosh snuck into the Dog’s camp and with a promise of an elephant’s weight in gold, convinced Kazdan to betray the Lyseni forces in the battle. With the prospect of defeat all but certain, it was an easy choice to make.
When dawn broke and battle commenced, Kazdan lived up to his promise and defected to the Tyroshi, killing many Lyseni soldiers in the chaos. What had not been counted on, was that Lys would also bribe all three of the Tyroshi sellsword companies to defect to their side in the battle. What had appeared an easy victory for the Dogs had turned to a slaughter. Thanks to the low character of sellswords, Lys carried the day. In anger at the Dog’s betrayal, the Lyseni commander ordered the entire company to be exterminated.
Jon Blackfort escaped the fate of his brothers only because he was in Myr at the time, enquiring about buying new steeds of good pedigree for the company. News reached him of the death of his friends, with the proclamation that Lovely Lys had declared the Daring Dogs bandits and criminals, and had ordered their utter destruction.
Now an outlaw in the eyes of the Lyseni, Jon decided it was time to return to Westeros. Word had spread throughout the city that the Blackfyre rebellion had come to its final days, and that his nephew Belric had been awarded the great castle of Harrenhal for his heroics. Jon knew that his family could have use for a man good with coin, and where better to escape the Perfumed Sister than a faraway haunted castle?
Physical Appearance: Jon is a short and unassuming man. He tends to wear simple colours of black or brown and has a clean shaven face. Years of Essosi sun have aged him beyond what might be expected.
Reputation: Jon is largely unknown in the Seven Kingdoms, as he has not set foot in Westeros for over twenty years. He is likely remembered only by his brothers and some of Harroway’s more elderly residents. He was always the smallest and quietest of the Blackfort boys.
