Violet found herself standing close to her uncle Hoster. He frightened her a little with his sour breath and his earlier effusive greeting, but she was determined to remember her courtesies with her kin.
"Uncle," she said. "I would love to hear about your heroics during the war."

Which of the girls was this one? By the fancy way she talked, he guessed she was the smart, youngest, one; still he couldn't figure out her name. Hoster was never quite sure, they all looked the same to him.
"I'll tell ye: Feck heroics, lil' girl. They is all dogshit." He spat somewhere near his feet. His tone was not gentle at all, courtesies were the things Hoster least knew about. "War is fecking hell... An' I won mask me stories in fancy bard songs. What I did in the war was kill lots'a people who was tryin' to kill me, that abou' it."

"I know killing is the point of war, but still, did you get to fight anyone important?" Violet asked.
No warrior, it was hard for her to relate to the realities of war and that meant her only points of reference were the glorious deeds told of in songs and stories. And the heroes always slew bad men of repute.

And the heroes always slew bad men of repute. "I fought hunger, an' plague, an' death; they's the real enemy ye hav' to fight. I smell'd me own friends dying si' by si' in da mud; holdin' them bowels cut out of them bellies; I heard the cries o' women bein' rap'd by Targary'n an' Blackfyre men alike; I saw babies hung as them parents watched in horro'." It was tough, even though Hoster and his Bonny Boys tried to avoid the battles, he couldn't quite escape the brutalities that war brought. "An' I won' lie, I did ma fai' share of those things too. Evry man that denies doin' the same is a filthy lil' lying piece of shit; no ma'er how high an' mighty they is."

Violet did not bother to hide her shudder. Let him see how disgusting his words were.
"Uncle, I know you mean well, but the septas told me that it was not proper to speak of horrid things in the presence of a lady. It sounds truly horrid. I was hoping you might have some noble tale of glory."

"Propah? Wan' know wha' ain' propah, lil' girl? Them septas and them seven pointed dogshit." Hoster spat again, he was very fond of doing that when talking about things he despised - by the frequency he spat, you could guess that was not a small list. Hoster was First Man to his core, he was averse to anything Andal, especially their Faith; he usually got pretty angry when that was the subject of a conversation and his constant inebriation didn't do much to help. "A real woman won' scare away from the truth. Ye can't hide from some'ing just 'cause it's ugly, ye gotta grab it by the balls an' face it."

She shuddered again. "With respect, uncle, that is not a pleasant thought. I am but a young girl and the war is over. There is no need to tell me ugly tales. If there were, the bards would surely sing of horrid things instead of heroes. Please, I beg you, say no more of such matters."

Hoster grimaced, shaking his head in disapproval. Damned Septons, destroying the good industrious first men descended women and children with their tales of gallantry and knighthood. They were getting soft and soft people were more likely to die in Hoster's point of view.
"I won' 'cause I know ye ain't gon' hear it." He barked. "Them septas, fillin' yer head with dogsh... Or shoul' ah say, like yer high an' mighty folk say, driv'l."

Having stopped to speak to a servant, Edmure heard his uncle's voice rise above the noise of the crowd. Glancing around he noted his youngest sister Violet looking uncomfortable as their uncle Hoster slurred and slobbered all over her. Giving a momentary frown, he put on a forced smile as he moved towards the pair.
" Violet! I saw you earlier and was coming to greet you but our brother sidetracked me. You have grown into a beautiful woman since I last saw you."

Violet wrinkled her nose at her uncle's words. She was trying to think of something polite to say when Edmure approached her.
"Edmure," she said softly. "I'm pleased to see you again." She gave him a smile. "You've grown up too. And you've better manners than our uncle, at least. I suspect you'll need them, now. We all will."
Uncle Hoster, she reflected sadly, sounded as lowborn as he was.

Alice gave a small laugh at that. "I've lived mah entire life in Harroway's, Ser Harlan, but I've often imagined what it would be like. I didn't imagine King's Landing was this big but I've heard that Braavos and Pentos are even bigger." She shrugged. "Probably just rumours." She thought on something for a moment. "Do ya know much of the royal family? The queen?" Harlan nodded appreciatively, genuinely impressed she'd heard of these cities. Then again, that was pretty much where his own knowledge on Essos ended. "With how things have worked out for you and your family, I wouldn't be surprised at all if you saw them yourself one day. Perhaps I'll even be lucky enough to accompany you," he said with a smile, and then shook his head. "I was lucky enough to speak to His Grace on one or two occasions, but I know relatively little about his family."

"I would love ta go ta Braavos!" Alice said excitedly before quickly calming herself, not wanting to appear foolish in front of the knight. "I have ta admit I'm a little worried about meeting the queen... I'm going ta be her lady in waiting and I don't really know anything about her... or how to act..."

"I believe her name is Rohanne," replied Ser Harlan, slightly embarassed about how little he knew about their queen. "A charming lady such as you, I'm sure it'll all come to you naturally," he assured her. "Perhaps try and befriend some of the other ladies at court for pointers?"

Our wine-sodden uncle I suspect lives for three things and three things only." he said not caring if his uncle heard or not. He counted them off on his fingers. "Whoring, killing and drinking. I'm of the opinion that only one of those is necessary and even then only sparingly."

He counted them off on his fingers. "Whoring, killing and drinking. I'm of the opinion that only one of those is necessary and even then only sparingly." She fought the urge to remind himi that it wasn't proper to talk about whores to a maiden sister. "Oh yes, you mean killing, of course. It's very sad, but I quite understand that it's necessary. But most of the killing is over now, isn't it? We'll have peace."
