"Good. Daemon is excellent, as is the Lord Commander. Anything to do with swords or lances you listen to them as if they were the Seven. Otherwise as a king and a commander I guess" he said with a wink.

"Which is the same damn thing in some people's minds," Nyles agreed. "I'll see you tonight uncle, with word of traitors."
I hope.

He found him in the evening, seated at the round weirwood table in White Sword Tower. It was typically the only time of day when any of them got any free time, as only 4 of them were required to guard the royals' rooms while they slept, the lord commander having situated the sleeping chambers for that exact purpose. The keep was silent, with Ser Gareth asleep upstairs in one of the seven beds.

"Greetings Ser Gwayne" says Richard as he enters the room "I hope I am not disturbing you at this time." Richard studied the storied knight closely as he talked. He, of all of the kingsguard, was the anomaly in more ways than one. Blind and a former loyalist, this man was unknown to him. Richard knew what had happened, but not the why. Not yet.

"Not at all, brother," Ser Gwayne replied softly, a whisper, though it carried across the silent room. He turned to face him, as polite society dictated, though he had never and would never see Ser Richard's face. "Quiet night," he remarked.

"It is. That we should have seven hundred more like it is my prayer. Though, undoubtedly the Lord Commander would like a little bit of action here and there" Richard joked quietly. "I am humbled to be a brother of yours, honestly. I am sure many have asked, but how do you do what you do? In the sept, you acted like no fighter I have ever seen."

Ser Gwayne did not laugh at the joke, merely nodded as if Ser Richard had spoken some sage piece of wisdom.
"How does a bird fly or a fish swim, Ser Richard?" he inquired, one of his fingers absently tracing the heart-shaped ruby set in Lady Forlorn's pommel. "I fight because I am a fighter. It is that simple."

"But... you can't see. Can't see where their sword is, how they move, everything you would need to do to survive even a few slashes. I've heard some tell stories of how you've trained your ears to hear a feather fall, and others say its some kind of magic. The idiots claim you're not actually blind, but I saw what happened. I've seen better than that at least." Richard sits down at the table and lays the dragons sword gently down on the table, to signify attendance.

"Maybe they're right," he offered, as if nothing in this world were false. "Perhaps the man I was before Redgrass was the blind one and now I truly see."

Richard sat back in his chair, not quite sure how to respond to that. This man was not what he had expected. Not at all. "Then by losing your eyes, you gained the true sight into this world?" he asked, playing the mans game "What do you see now?"

"And isn't that the way of the world? Must you not experience loss to appreciate gain?" he inquired. "Is that not the bedrock of our sworn brotherhood? You lose the old family and gain a new one."
"What I see now cannot be put into words, Ser Richard, no more than you could explain to a man born blind in the dark what a sunset looks like or music to a man born with ears. Tell me, what is it you see, with your fresh eyes in this new place? I would know."

"A white banner, stained with blood,." he replies honestly "Mayaps the red can be washed out, yet that is uncertain. I see the greatest warriors I've ever known gathered together in this place, yet there are so many questions on how this all comes together. How did a knight such as you come into Daemons service? How do our sworn brothers treat you? I see uncertainty. And yet it all reminds me that I must serve."
"But I would say, Ser, that I believe that words can help us to understand things we cannot see or hear. The sunset is warmth, the meeting of orange, yellow and red. Red is hot and spicy, like standing to close to the fire. Orange, warm and smooth, like velvet heated by the sun. Yellow buttery and rich, sunshine on your face. And for music, all it takes is a drum for a man to feel what music is, the beat, the vibration of the leather under your fingers. It may not be a lute, but it is music." Richard pauses, embarrassed in spite of himself. He had spoken overmuch. "Yet still I would know what it is you now have."

"A Kingsguard serves for life," he repeated, as if it were that simple. "His Grace defeated me in single combat and rather than leave me to die, saw me personally to the care of his maester. There is no king more worthy of our service. I only regret there was a time when my oath made us foes."
"You would have made a fine poet had you not taken up the sword and lance, ser," Gwayne commended, with a nod. "I have what I have always had. I fight as I have always fought. Even without sight, the dance remains the same."

"Have our fellow brothers taken so well to you as well as the king? I know we are sworn brothers, but... I suspect that some do not feel kindly toward you." Richard thought back to what he had seen, and the hate that had burned through him at the man. That was gone, but the memory of it still disturbed him.
