"Fifteen men is a small band. If I gave you command, could you do the job?" asked Edmure.

Jon stood aside as the Lord stormed out of the hall. He recognised the quartered sigil of House Vance and raised an eyebrow as the man's unexpected presence. He gently pushed his way past the waiting petitioners and walked over to his nephew. "Ser Edmure, Ser Willis. Was that Lord Vance I passed on my way in?"

"It was." replied Edmure rising to greet his uncle. "Lord Roger has sought aid from us. Apparently Smallwood has seized a village and mill which his people rely on for their winter supplies. Piper knights have been sighted in Lord Roger's lands as well signifying that Smallwood's aggression has his support."
He returned to his seat. "I have decided to assist Lord Roger. Willas here has volunteered to be part of the small force I will be sending. I will also send a raven to Rivverun and try and inform Belric of these developments. However we cannot afford to engage in all out conflict and I would try and avoid it if possible. We may need to send someone to treat with Smallwood and maybe Piper for the return of the village and mill. What are your thoughts?"

He frowned as his nephew recounted the tale, nodding at its conclusion. "We cannot afford to cross swords with the Pipers nor the Smallwoods. Especially with the Lord and Lady at Riverrun. Both Tully and Piper fought for the Red Dragon, and I would not trust the trout to act out in our favor." He rubbed his chin in thought. "Send me with Ser Willis. I shall talk the Pipers and Smallwoods back to their lands ."

Septon Jared stood. "If I can be of any assistance, Ser Edmure, I would be proud to serve in this matter."

Edmure looked across to Jared. "I'm not sure what you can offer to the success of this matter Septon, but I'm willing to be persuaded."
He looked to his uncle. "I am loathe to see you go uncle, as your talents here will be missed, but I fear we have no choice. The situation you may be placed in is likely to be dangerous. You shall be well guarded though. Ser Willas here and Ser Willem will see to that."

Consider yourself hired on a trial basis. Report to Jormun Rivers, our Master of the Hunt for your work assignment. I will review your position at the end of the month and determine whether we take you on permanently." He turned to a guard. "Court is closed for the day. Tell the remaining petitioners to come back on the morrow."

And besides, I may be able to offer comfort to the suffering. And perhaps, if Lord Smallwood sees a man of the Faith among the party, he will be less rash."

"If my uncle will have you along, then I have no objections." replied Edmure.
"Very well then. In the event of trouble, Ser Willas will command the men. Ser Willem his lieutenant. Jon will serve as adviser to both and will be responsible for treating with Lord Smallwood and Lord Vance with my full authority, for the return of this village and it's mill. Septon Jared - you will assist where necessary, chiefly where my uncle is concerned. See that you have paper and quill with you."

"Lovely," Willis replied, then turned to the others present, "We leave first thing in the morning." He gave a pause, then considered the non-soldier present. "Jon, can you manage that?"

Jon gave a wry smile to the knight. "I served as paymaster of a sellsword company for some years, Ser. Dawn will do fine."

Ser Willem arrived, accompanied by the guardsman sent to find him. He surveyed the men gathered in discussion and approached. "You requested my presence, Ser Edmure?" He said, once he was near the group.
