Traditional though many of her views were, Violet was shocked by Saesha's trebuchet metaphor and it took all her willpower not to protest. Instead she pretended she had misunderstood the comment by smiling sweetly and resolving that she would make Lord Lucamore value her opinions.
"The godsworn should keep their vows, my lady, and so should the men of the sworn brotherhoods. That's why I left the motherhouse before I took a septa's vows, I realised I didn't want that life after all. Lucky for me, I realised that before I took the vows, not afterwards. But once someone takes those vows, they should keep them."
She spoke with the naive confidence of a young girl who had little real experience of the world and certainly no real concept of what the celibate orders were expected to give up.

"So you were happy to let them feed you, clothe you, roof you, culture you and educate you, but when it came to take your vows then, THEN you realised that was not the life you wanted?" She asked, looking to Violet, "I see, so vows are important, but commitments are not?"
She smiled again and waved her hand airily at Violet, "I am only teasing."

Violet smiled uneasily, having initially taking the comments seriously. There were times she quite liked Saesha but she was still in awe of her confidence and poise, as well as conscious of the other woman's status as a member of the royal family.
"You've done lots of things most women wouldn't even dare to dream of," she said. "If you have a daughter, won't you teach her to do the same, if she wishes it?"

"I'd like to think she'd be raised like Lady Joanna, here, the best if both worlds, I think there is nothing wrong with a woman taking an active Martial role, again, as I did, but we must all honour our families, and do as required in all areas of our lives. We women are never allowed to shirk on one area, if we wish to incorporate another, we need to add it on top, not sacrifice." She said, with a sigh as if t were a shame. "What of you, Violet, how would you raise a daughter?"

"I would wish my daughter to be accomplished in the feminine arts," Violet replied. She knew she had to be careful what she said next, since she did not wish to offend the guests.
"I can't imagine my own daughter going to battle truly, and I don't even know how my husband feels about such things. But I suppose I wouldn't forbid it if my husband allowed it. I grew up with Dacey, after all."
She looked at Saesha's guests and then back at Saesha. "What do you think, ladies? Is it the mother or father's role to decide what becomes of a daughter?"

"The father... of course, as with all things" Saesha said with a smile that told she did not think that were true, "but not without some gentle direction from his lady wife."
"You must have learnt all manner of feminine arts at the mother house, Violet, yet I've never seen you exhibit any? Can you not sing us something? I must confess, though my speaking voice is pleasant enough, I cannot hold a tune."

Violet felt a little flustered at the request. "I could, if you would like it, but I was taught not to boast of my accomplishments. I sing passing well, but there were some girls more talented than me. And one of the septas had a voice like the Maiden herself come to earth.."

"You met the maiden herself to know?" She asked, tone teasing again, "you need not do anything you do not wish, Violet."
She turned back to her guests, "lady Violet is right, it has been five years without tourney for all of us, it will be interesting to see how the fighters react to a simulated war after so long in an actual war."

Visenya, ever the cynic, declared, "I expect there will be blood in the water during the melee. Oh, the offender will apologize profusely, but observe the look of satisfaction when he thinks none are looking."

"But it will be an accident, surely," Violet said. "I would hope nobody would be so cruel as to take advantage of the contest and cause wounds on purpose." Though she was a bit dubious even as she said it, given the strained relations between her family and House Tully.

Joanna Mallister cleared her throat uncomfortably, the only individual present who was to participate in the melee.
"My father had a riddle when I was younger. The North has frost, the West has coins, the Stormlands have trees. the Reach has grain, the Iron Islands have ships, the Vale has mountains, and Dorne has sand. What do the Riverlands have, more than all of these combined? In my youth, I guessed rivers and he laughed. It was years later I learned the answer is grudges."

Violet thought of the age old quarrel between the houses Bracken and Blackwood and decided that Joanna had a point.
"I cannot disagree with you," she said. "And yet I would hope nobody would dishonour my brother's hospitality by pursuing old grudges within his domain.."

Yesult quietly makes rounds with drinks and trays of nibbles as things are consumed while the Ladies chatter and enjoy company.

Saesha sat back and listened to the talk, thinking Belric had quite dishonoured himself enough by pursuing grudges, a little more would barely hurt." "Lady Violet is so sweet, is she not, these things can bubble up over nothing, a glance or a misplaced word, and not just between old enemies."

"I think you have summed up the nature of men," Joanna smirked, taking a drink from Yseult's tray. "Short tempers and long memories."
