"Right..." said Vex, starting to wheel her horse back towards where they'd come from. "Which way was your fat farmer again?" she asked Harlan.

Harlan raised a hand, pointing the way towards Old Bael’s farm. “It’s just a short ride down the road, on the outskirts of town.” When he dropped his arm, his hand landed strategically on Vex’s thigh.

Alyn cursed under his breath at the sight of the guardsmen. Four - five of them against six well armed guardmen would not end well for them. So as not to be seen, he silently urged his horse off the trail so that he was obscured by trees and drew his sword. Looking to Donal he shrugged his shoulders and gave a wordless shake of his head.

Donal appraised the situation and came to a similar conclusion as the others. "It was a good idea." He commented quietly. "Just bad luck."
Donal looked at the guardsmen and decided they should avoid riding to the farm on the common road as they would obviously be spotted and did not look like innocent smallfolk. "Back the way we came and follow the river toward the farm?" he suggested.

(+1 Stealth)
Despite being on a horse and taking the incredibly suspicious action of drawing his blade, Alyn manages to obscure himself from the guardsmen. The hunter in the party quickly discovers the trail left by Vex’s horse and the guardsmen return to their horses, presumably to mount up and follow the trail to the mill.

As the guards all began to prepare to leave before Donal's eyes, he thanked the gods for blessing them with such great fortune. "Into the trees with Alyn." He hissed to Bandy, Vex, and Harlan, adapting his plan to the new circumstances. "We'll wait for them to leave and then get the armor."

One armored man on a horse managing to hide from seven men riding towards him was a miracle. Two additional armored men on a horse trying to do the same was idiocy.
“Halt!,” the middle aged guard captain at the head of the party called out, likely the village bailiff. “In the name of Lord Wilbert Lychester of Medway.”
(As Vex and Harlan were hanging back, they can still ride off if they’d prefer.)

Apparently Alyn had more experience hiding in bushes than Donal, as he and Bandy failed miserably in their attempt to get off the path into the trees unnoticed. In fairness to Donal it was not something he was accustomed to doing, having more experience on the other side of the law.
Not fancying the group's chances in a straight chase, what with two of their horses being encumbered by two riders, Donal concluded their best chance was to split up and hopefully divide the pursuers amongst them. "Split up and meet at the farm!" He called before digging his heels into the horse and doing what he could to marshal it toward the clearest path out of the trees he had gotten them into.

Completely off the track, obscured by trees and sure he had not been seen by the guards, Alyn leapt off his horse, immediately he heard the word "Halt!" and sheathed his sword which in any case would be relatively useless in close quarters in the trees, if he were discovered. Swiftly he drew the short blades he kept on his person and pressed his back against the trunk of a large tree, facing the opposite side to the track, looking from side to side in order not to be ambushed.
He hoped that the Medway guards would be distracted enough by Donal and Bandy, to thunder straight past his position. From there he would do what he could to make his way back to the rest.

"I wish I had a bow to shoot their horse," Vex muttered before turning the palfrey around and riding off, obviously avoiding the road back to the mill. She was going head for their meeting spot by the river, but take the long way so as not to run into any guards.

“And thus, the reign of Dolan the Dunce has ended,” he joked to vex as they road off. “Had he kept his mouth shut, we could have walked right past those guards without incident. Should they come after us, let me do the talking. Bow or not, we can’t fight all of them.”

You all having a piss, making the kid bark orders?" she asked. She readjusted the reins and brought the horse to a slightly slower pace once they were in the clear. "Now... tell me about the papers," she said.

Donal swore at the horse vehemently when it didn't respond to his guidance and put his heels forcefully into it's flanks, trying to urge proper pace out of it. Looking back over his shoulder he saw all six guardsmen pursuing him. He supposed this was good in a way; if he escaped none of the others could blame his leadership for getting them into trouble. However the prospects of escape were looking somewhat bleak as each time he looked over his shoulder around the bulky Bandy he saw the pursuers seeming to gain on them. Desperately he scanned around for any kind of terrain it would be impossible to get a horse into as it was looking like that might be their best chance of evading capture. (Observation 0 if relevant. Horsemanship 40 if rolling it again is necessary)

(Donal will roll -10 on his horsemanship rolls as long as he has a second passenger. If Donal beats a guardsman's roll by a heavy wound or more, he loses them. If a guardsman does the same, he enters within range of melee combat. Fighting while trying to flee imposes an additional -10 penalty to subsequent horsemanship rolls.)
Donal is unable to find a suitable spot and is forced to run for his life. He manages to lose two of the guardsmen in the dense foliage. However, the guard captain and an additional guardsman pull up to flank the fleeing horse on either side, drawing shortswords as they approached. "Halt!" the guard captain continued to call out in vain. The remaining two guardsmen were still hot on their tail.
(+1 Horsemanship. Donal loses 2 guards. 2 enter into melee range and 2 are still giving chase.)
