"True. I suppose you'll be coming with those of us visiting this farmer then." Donal allowed, ignoring her insulting tone for the time being, while he watched Tim scamper off to ready the boat. Then he turned back to Harlan, offering the man his attention.

Barley looked at Vex and shook her head, “no, I don’t, I left them in the chest,” she said to the only other woman in the group. Vex seemed confused for a moment, then glanced over her shoulder to Harlan and the receding Tim. "Just took the coin then, eh?" she asked quietly so that only Barley would hear, and offered her something of a conspiratorial half-smile.

“How dare you” she said with mock indignation, “There wasn’t any coin in the chest,” Barley said back to her with smirk in return, “I can’t read good, so didn’t grab the papers”

"That's right. There wasn't," Vex agreed, resorting to a nod instead of a wink, even though that would've been her initial reaction. Someone had once told her before that winking just wasn't the same when you only had one eye.
"Harlan must have them, then," she commented, making the only logical deduction. Far as she knew, he was the only one of them now that could read. She looked to the man in question, but made no move to approach him yet. Seemed like Donal was vying for his attention at the moment. "What's with the kid?" she asked. "He fell on his head while I was checking the perimeter?"

“Who knows, a couple of people said he could be the leader for now, abd he’s already let it go to his head, to be honest, it’s not what I look for in a leader, now I get the virtue of an opinion in it.” She shrugged, “it seems less important than getting away with our lives, but it seems I’m being outvoted at every turn. I guess I should get to the boat”

Vex snorted. "Instead of clearing the mill, they decide now's time to prank the kid?" she wondered, rolling her eye.
"If you want to take the boat, sure" she said with another nod. "Might have holes in it though."

“That would end up with me getting very wet then” Barley said with another sly grin, “you saw the boss right? Surprised these guys are so eager to end up like that, talking about doing jobs while the town is on alert.”

It was unclear wether Harlan had blatantly ignored the question about Longinch’s papers, or if he just hadn’t been paying attention. Either way, he didn’t respond.
“Old Man Bael has three sons of fighting age who will need to be dealt with.” He said in response to Donal. “As for the gold, word is he’s been robbing vulnerable soldiers on their way home from war.”

"Seems like a dishonourable fellow." Donal remarked. "We'd be doing everyone a great service dissuading him from such activities in the future, and relieving him of his ill gotten gold. Did Longinch tell you if the river passes his land or will we have to meet the others after the job?"

Harlan laughed, “Yes, he’s quite the evil man. We’d best show him the honorable way to rob and murder.” He punched Donal in the shoulder, assuming the man had been joking with him. “As for the river, I can’t say one way or the other.”

As Donal had been somewhat joking, he grinned back. "Alright. Me, you, Vex, and Alyn will take the horses and go pay a visit to this farmer and relieve him of his stolen coin. Pete can burn down the mill and the trees about it if it pleases him and then join the others on the boat. We will all meet downriver; say twelve leagues from here and split the spoils."
He looked around at the boat group for someone to put in charge of it. Pete was a definite no due to insanity, and Tim would bore them all with tales about kings or something else ridiculous. Barely was passive, and Bret had said little throughout the affair. As for Bandy he did not want to strengthen any claim to leadership he might have. "Daven shall have the charge of that group until we rejoin." He decided.

Old Man Bael's farm was known throughout Medway, being one of the largest to pay tribute to Lord Wylchester. However, it was on the whole as pitiful as any other farm since the war's end. It's fruits and grains were as dead as the sons and brothers of most local families, and it's cows as pathetic as Harlan's love life.
It was a few miles down the river, where it sat beside the Red Fork, trying to suck up its life force to no effect like a squat, dying toad. There were several buildings on the property and the gang had passed through those lands many a time. On the surface, it was as nearly barren as the land surrounding this very watermill.
And yet, Old Man Bael remained as fat as he did before the war and his sons as strong as ever. How he maintained the coin to feed his family and pay his taxes had been a mystery until Harlan's words just now.

Alyn nodded in approval at Donal's words. He moved across to Donal and said in a low voice.
"Seems as if we have more thing to collect. Longinch's armor is hanging uselessly from a tree less than a mile from here. Seems a waste to forego such a prize, given he won't be needing it anymore. Good armor ain't cheap."

Donal nodded, eager to please Alyn who was both a knight and was largely responsible for his temporary leadership. "Well said, Ser." He nodded, responding back quietly since Alyn seemed to want this to remain between them. "It would serve us well for you to have proper armour."
Donal hadn't remembered where that farm was until now, his eyes on the greater prizes of the nobles and figuring out (mostly unsuccessfully) how they might be robbed. Perhaps he should have told the others to take the boat there. But then someone else might do something impressive or someone might see Vex questioning his leadership. Better to win the glory with a select few and return with the gold like a proper leader would.

"Bandy's coming with us," said Vex as this much was obvious, looking to the man in question. He had a horse. The alternative made no sense. "'Sides... ain't ever heard of a gang of four bandits that lasted long," she added to Donal, a glint in her eye.
She nudged her palfrey towards Harlan and looked down at him with a slight smirk. "Need a ride, fair ser?"
