When the minstrel had finished his song, Tim decided the time was right to do some digging. Keeping the posture of a man who had been beaten down by a hard life, he feigned tiredness by yawning and spoke. "Good song, that. Know any 'appy ones. 'Bout women and drinkin' and such?" "Aye mister, you toss a few coppers in my bowl and I'll have the whole place on their feet," Marlon said, as he tuned his instrument, motioning to the wooden bowl near his feet. "I find that hard to believe. My pa' traded a pleasure slave once that was a Summer Islander, man was famed for the size of his manhood. That and always talkin' about himself by name." Taero says dubitably. "Was claimed by his previous master that the man walked into a feast once and had everyone laying on the ground in pleasure after a candlemark." "Makes you wonder if the rest of the world isn't overcompensating with their wars and titles and keeps," the dicing knight suggested, throwing the bones again. "Not that I'm complaining. Those wars keep my purse heavy, the title means I can sell my sword for double the price, and there's a sturdy keep and feather bed with my name on it once I turn this one in." Harlan nodded, withdrawing the proper sum from a pocket within his shirt. At the mention of Gwyn, Harlan was sure to give her a worthy glance. "You are pretty far out 'ere in the country," said Harland, turning back to Warren. "How long 'ave you owned the Tavern? Is she a new buy, or did yah some'ow avoid the war?" "Began laying the timbers a year back, once it was clear to any man with a lick of sense how the war was going to end. Opened the doors the day it did," Warren replied, setting out the drinks, which were indeed refreshingly cold. "Your rooms up the stairs, second door on the right," he added, handing him a key. "Bethany will bring your food over."

Lucas held his tongue as he was described. It was hard to defend oneself from a clout when one's hands were chained to their ankles.

"Money is good, fighting is good. I know a thing about selling a sword or bow at an inflated price too." He says with probably his first sincere grin. "Shouldn't get a feather bed though for giving up a slave though.. Why not just keep him a slave?"

"I hope for your sake you fight better than you dice, friend," the sellsword knight quipped. "And if I did that I'd end up with a price on my own head. Slavery is illegal in these parts, though no telling how long that will last with the king's Tyroshi bride."

Tim fished around his person and finally found a tarnished copper. "Me last one," he said, truthfully. "Me mate looks after th' coin. I ain't no good wi' coin." He tossed the coin into the bowl. "Seems like a nice place, this."

"Then what do you call those slaves running around these parts?" He says looking taken aback. "Those other dirty people that do the slaves work?"

"Thank you kindly. There's no place I'd rather be," Marlon told time earnestly, before beginning a more lively song, which sounded disturbingly similar to Cotton Eyed Joe.
"Serfs?" Ser Zachry suggested. "They're not slaves. They work a lord's land in exchange for being allowed to use a portion of it to grow food for their own purposes. This entitles them to protection and justice as well." The bounty hunter motioned to the chained man as a convenient visual lesson. "From reprobates such as this."

Taero shakes his head, "Too much nonsense and go betweens with your system. Easier to give everything to your master and then have him divide the spoils based on how well they work. Slave only go hungry if they do nothing and deserve hunger. Tis easy way of doing things. If slave steps out of line, there is another to take his place. If slave have good fire in his veins he join fighting pit and make his master money, and get treated very well." Taero says with a flourish, "Say raster reprobate, which would you prefer, these chains of serfdom, or freedom to fight and the best women and food as long as you win." He says talking to the chained man for the first time.

"Very nice," said Tim, applauding. He listehed a while longer then went to find Harlan and their drinks.

The talk of slavery and the comment about the benefits for its victims proved too much for Lucas to contain himself. He looked up at the ginger with anger in his eyes. "Fuck you, foreign bastard. Was men like you who took my Kyra. Were it not for these chains, I would kill you here for the slaver you are."

The dicing knight waited a beat, seeming to mull over the finer points of his charge's words, before throwing an elbow into his face. Lucas felt his mouth immediately fill with blood.
"Charming, isn't he? He has a point though. You might want to keep your opinions on slavery to yourself around these parts, friend."

Taero grinned even more after the chained mans declaration. "Ah yes, this one has much spirit. Would do well in the fighting pits of Myr, would have made my father heaps of gold." He didn't know anything about this mans wife, though he did recall a lesson from his father when he was little, something about Westerosi slaves being very bad tempered and not worth all that much, mainly just pennies and coppers. "If you say so, Ser Dicer. Guess slavery is for us refined folk out in the Free Cities."

“Lot to appreciate ‘bout a man who takes ‘is fate into ‘is own hands,” Harlan sayed kindly, taking the offered key. “I was a stone mason’s apprentice b‘for the war, used to work on ‘omes, keeps, city walls, bout anythin’ you can come up with. Might of even built a tavern or two, if memory serves.” Harlan allowed himself to be saddened by the thought, thinking back on the regrets of a life he had never lived. He then forced a smile, as if he wished to dwell on founder memories. “That was a long time gone, nuther life. ‘Ow’s it going for you... the tavern business? Get a fair bit of foot traffic all the way out ‘ere?”

"As I said, that is an opinion I would keep to myself," the gambler replied, looking slightly uncomfortable at the foreigner's continued assertions. "What brings you to these unrefined lands then and so far from your bastion of refinement?" “Lot to appreciate ‘bout a man who takes ‘is fate into ‘is own hands,” Harlan sayed kindly, taking the offered key. “I was a stone mason’s apprentice b‘for the war, used to work on ‘omes, keeps, city walls, bout anythin’ you can come up with. "I keep telling my wife that queen living pays off. ground near the eastern wall has begun to sink from the heavy rainfall of late. Looks like it might need to be reinforced. I'd be obliged if you took a look at it." "Fine a place for a tavern as any, this near the Kingsroad over a day's ride from the nearest city or town. We're in the perfect spot for it and we do just fine. That tourney last month was a real boon for us."
