“Course it’s real,” Bethany replied, indignantly, though not incensed. It was clear it was not the first time someone had asked. “My Pa is honest as they come. His Grace visited the wounded at the hospital tent after Redgrass Field. Penned that letter in his own hand.”

"All the big wonders will last a bit for me to go see them. What I am more interested in is the way of life over here." Taero states, not bothering to say that any big castles these have would be dwarfed by the greatness of the Free Cities, with the main exception being their giant Ice Wall. "Well if you were here during the war, you saw more of the way of life over here than you're like to see during the peace," the bounty hunter mused. "In Essos, war is a business. Here, it's a way of life." "Makes for a pretty fair shitty quality of life given your rulers don't have any standing armies." Taero points out, "If war was such an important part of things here, wouldn't they have better trained soldiers?"

“When I stepped off the road tonight, I’d never ‘ave guesses I’d be walkin’ into a tavern with bloody Daemon Blackfyer’s signiture on the wall.” Harlan slapped his knee with genuine excitment. “That’s a damn treasure. What kind’a injury did the ol’ man take during the fighting?”

"Pa lost his leg at Redgrass," Bethany informed him, though Harlan should have already figured that out from Warren hobbling around and his earlier jest about his missing limb. "Says he saw it as a fair trade for whatever small part he played to seat a good man on the throne."

"The difference being in Essos you hire an army and send it off to fight your war for you. There is no risk except the coin in your purse," the one sellsword explained to the other. "Here, when there is conflict, the mightiest king down to the lowliest peasant is expected to step upon the battlefield when the time comes. And I defy you to find a better trained and better equipped soldier than a Westerosi knight."

"Well aren't you a nice boy," Ethel replied in a matronly tone. "Logan has got the heavy lifting handled just fine though. You're far too skinny though, all skin and bones. So you can help me out by coming right back here for a second helping when you've finished your plate, on the house." "Gladly," he said. "Always got room for food as good as yours. But I'd like to 'elp out while I'm 'ere. Me ole mam said I ain't got no brains but nobody could e'er say I weren't 'elpful." "Nonsense," the older woman replied, taking Tim by the hand and leading him to a comfortable armchair by the fireplace, gently but insistently making him sit. "Now you just sit here by the warm fire, relax, and get your fill," she cooed, actually tucking him him with a nearby blanket. "That's all the help I need, especially with that storm brewing outside."

Ut he w as ultimately too self-centred not to enjoy having a fuss made of him. "I spose I can rest a while longer, an' an eat a little more," he said. "Yer a good woman, Mistress. D'yer treat all yer visitors so good? Might be I wont wanna leave." Hr grinned.

Their city conquered or depending on the enemy looted or blackmailed with violence. As for the ability of a knight, from what I have seen of your battles, a Dothraki horde is better then your heavy plate laden knights on horses. even my company was better equipped with our crossbows then one of your units of crossbow men. The famed unsullied of Astapor are probably better trained though since they are an army of slaves they cannot cover themselves in metal unless their master has the willpower to do so." Taero rambles on, "Plus even if an army of knights could take all of them on. Why then do your lords continue to hire and bring over Mercenary companies from our lands?"

"Consider the Respite your home away from home."

"You see what happens to the losing side in wars on this side of the Narrow Sea?" Dicer inquired, recent history on his side in this debate. "Whole families put to the sword, anyone that could raise a claim for the crown made a head short. War makes kinslayers of us all in Westeros. That there is the difference. Your wars end when there is no more gold to spend. Ours end when there is no more blood to spill." "Everyone in the Riverlands knows you Myrish were brought over by Bracken only to match the Raven's Teeth and I'd bet my horse you took more casualties than them on every battle your found yourselves on opposite sides."

Once Harlan finished his meal, his eyes diverted to desert. He excused himself from the table and walked over to the resident tavern whore. “Warren said you was one of ‘is taverns finer attractions. What brought you out ‘ere in the Kingsroad?”

Gwyn looks bitterly depressed before Harlan gains her attention. Her smile is a full second late in masking her dismal state of mind, but when she speaks, it is a fine tone of voice, rich with learning and etiquette. "Good ser. The red wine is surely a finer attraction. Buy me some and I shall tell you how I might... exceed it."
Her smile is dazzling. Somehow she has all her teeth and her perfect posture suggests a history in court.

While he appreciated his hostess' kindness, he felt a little frustrated because he now had to find another way of scouting out the rest of the place. Then, as inspiration struck, he yawned. "I'm tired. Think I might go take a nap in our room, if yer don't mind."

Harlan grinned, he had always had a thing for proper Ladies. He obliged her request, purchasing a glass of red from Warren and returning to her eagerly. “Let’s take our drinks to my room, where we can ‘ave a little privacy.”

"It's your room, dear," the matron replied, not entirely sure why Tim was asking for permission to use his own room. Warren had given Harlan the key.
