"Like killing wounded men and hauling armor around?" Nyles shrugged. "It would have been nicer to have a sister around. The gods weren't on the battlefield, regardless of what anyone else says."

Violet shrugged. "I know nothing about the battlefield, but I do love the Seven. But I won't talk about them if you'd rather I didn't. But anyway, even if I hadn't gone to the motherhouse, I would have stayed at home while you were off at war. The battlefield is no place for a lady."

"It's no place for anyone," he agreed. "But you know, the women do most of the scouring when the fighting is done. Cut fingers off for rings and the like." He shivered. "What do you prefer to do now? You should be the one staying here."

"Alice is older than me, she's bound to get first choice," Violet said with a little shrug. "I like books and singing and listening to music. I'm learning to make my own clothes, but I need a lot more practice yet. It must all sound very dull to you. Music and sewing and things, I mean, when you've been in battle."
She decided she was too much a lady to remark upon the horrors of women cutting off dead men's fingers.

"Sounds better than battle." He shakes his head. "I don't understand why the rest seem to like it so much. The rush of blood...I felt it so much I have trouble keeping my hands from shaking now," he admitted. "When the adrenaline isn't flowing."

She regarded him with a little sympathy. "I can't imagine what it must be like, but I suppose you don't have much choice. Unless...you could join the Faith, or study at the Citadel, if you would rather not enter battle?"

"I don't chase girls now, but celibacy has no incentive for me," he said. "Just...if we gain so much from war what's our reason to ever stop killing?"

"Because killing is wicked, when you're not under threat, or else under orders to serve your liege lord in battle. I suppose if King Daemon decided to conquer the world you would have to go, but I expect His Grace has enough to worry about setting the realm to rights.".

"What about the pillaging after battle?" Angles asked. "That's when most men die. And then what happens to the smallfoll when we find them..."

Violet shrugged. "Nyles, I've never even seen a battlefield and I don't understand war. How should I know about killing? Maybe you should ask a septon about it. They would tell you why it's wrong to take a man's life unless you have to."

"You spent six years away. I thought maybe they taught you," he shrugged. "I think life is a battlefield," he said in a low tone. "Where do you dream of going? When you marry?"

"Somewhere airy and pretty," she replied. "Somewhere with soft cushions and pretty gowns and music. Gardens too. I want to be surrounded by beauty.. And what about you? What do you dream of?"

Death, he thought to himself. "I don't know," he admitted. "Younger daughters can get castles and lands. Younger brothers usually get...nothing," he said. "Maybe a pretty girl and a nice little estate."

"That sounds pleasant enough. It's not Harrenhal, of course, but I doubt a nice little estate would have the same reputation either. Or you might even be lucky enough to get an heiress. There's bound to be a few more about, after the war," she suggested, cheerfully enough.

"Maybe," he agreed. "I think I'm too young to get on that wagon, though." He shrugged. "Who knows? After I get knighted maybe I'll journey the Seven Kingdoms and wait for a prize to fall onto my lap."
