"I did," replied Dacey, stepping forward. How Edmure had immediately deducted that when the more obvious guess would have been an ambush, she didn't know. She'd wanted to take this to Belric's solar, but clearly some wished to make a scene out of this in the courtyard. Fine.

Having been informed of the party's return, Edmure made his way to the gates. Appalled at what he saw, he quickly sought out Willem who together with the men he had led out, appeared to be uninjured. As soon as he saw that, he knew what the party led by his sister and uncle had done. "They attacked the bandits without waiting for your return it appears." he said to Willem loudly, not caring who heard. "Who the fuck made that decision?" Willem had opened his mouth to confirm that had occured, but Dacey beat him to the punch, so he fell silent and watched Dacey speak. He had been fairly confident it had been Dacey or Hoster, but had not wanted to blame Dacey without knowing it had in fact been her doing. He looked on, curious to see how she would explain her actions.

Percival leaned forward and snorted. "It was my duty. Not stop whining and get back to doing yours." The Maester thought a moment and then added in a whisper only for Hoster, "In a month if you still feel that way come to my rooms and I will fix you up a cure." He straightened up and walked away from the man.

"How many men are dead? How the fuck did this happen?" He walked over to Hoster, kneeling next to him. "Where's my sister?"" "How da feck shoul' ah know?!" Hoster roared, annoyed at his nephew ignoring his much more serious wounds. "If ye ain't noticed, ah just woke up an' can't fecking see." Percival leaned forward and snorted. "It was my duty. Not stop whining and get back to doing yours." The Maester thought a moment and then added in a whisper only for Hoster, "In a month if you still feel that way come to my rooms and I will fix you up a cure." He straightened up and walked away from the man. Hoster went completly silent after that, all he wanted now was to die. Sleep seemed to be the closest thing he had.

Edmure turned to his sister, the displeasure he felt evident on his face.
"Ser Willem here informed us that you had located the bandits in a house in the claypits and were observing their position, when he was sent back for re-inforcements, which I provided. That means it was unlikely you were ambushed. Why in Seven Hells didn't you wait for Ser Willem's return with the extra men?"

"Because I thought we didn't need them. We outnumbered the bandits. We had the higher ground, the surprise, everything," she said. "Still, Benjen and Willem made a point so I sent for them. Should things go south, it'd be good to have backup on the way, I figured."
She paused for a long moment. She'd not told anyone of this because Edmure was her brother. Now, she didn't care. "Had I known how far the consequences of your actions in the woods would reach, I'd have of course waited them out. This is the last time I'm fixing your mess."
With a final steely glance at Edmure, Dacey turned to Belric. "Half of our men defected because Edmure threw their brother in front of the bear we slew when we got here," she said without missing a beat. She didn't mention he'd also ran away from the fight. Edmure should have been grateful for the omission, really. "We lost our advantage and all our men."
She didn't mind that all of Hoster's men had died. It was probably even better this way. They had been unstable and unreliable. The way she saw it, the only regrettable losses had been the two guards. And Hoster's parts. One might've even argued Edmure owed him new ones now.

"Don't give me that shit Dacey." snarled Edmure, his temper beginning to boil to the surface. He forced himself to talk relatively calmly. "The consequences of my actions? Look around at the consequences of yours. Had you waited, as I believe you were advised, you could have attacked with overwhelming force with far less loss of life..." he glanced at Hoster, .. and limb."
He curled his lip in blatant disgust at her attempt to deflect responsibility for her own actions. "And half our men defected did they?" he said , his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Because I forced one of Hoster's goons to stand up to a bear. That's supposed to be an excuse for them...and you, is it?"

"And what if they'd left or seen us?" she asked, turning around. She didn't seem fazed by Edmure's rising temper at all. "Benjen covered us from the ridge and we were able to make the descent undetected. I'd take that over a horseback ambush any day."
Everything had been perfectly executed. Up until Willis suffered his fit.

Willem looked shocked at the revelation that Edmure had thrown one of his own men in front of a bear and even more shocked that Edmure did not even deny it. Yet while his estimation of Edmure had fallen, he still felt that the man raised good points about Dacey's poor decision.
As he watched the exchange continue, he reflected how unfortunate it was that the only Blackfort he liked had turned out to be someone who would throw his friends between himself and danger.

And it worked so well." said Edmure, his voice still dripping with sarcasm. "What next Dacey? What more tales can you tell? Who else can you blame?"

"Ain't right, deprivin' a man of wine at a time like this," Benjen muttered under his breath as the testy young maester slapped Ben's wineskin out of Hoster's hands. But he did look suitably chastened at the mention of eternal sleep and whatnot.
He cocked his head at the revelation that Edmure had apparently thrown one of Hoster's men to... an actual bear, if Ben was understanding it correctly. That certainly put some of the Bonny Boys' actions in context, and lessened Ben's opinion of Edmure considerably. But Ben snorted out loud at Dacey's insistence that they had not needed the reinforcements. They clearly had needed them, given all of their people were either dead or cut to shit. Given the actual results of the battle it was laughable to suggest otherwise, no matter how justified Dacey had believed herself to be at the time. Hell, even just having Willem's sword might have saved Hoster's arm.
But Ben kept those thoughts to himself. He was more than happy to call Dacey shit-for-brains to her face, but he wasn't going to tattle to teacher because things had gone south. And as stupid as her decision was, she had faced its consequences herself and fought like a lion.

Perhaps if Benjen's ears hadn't been sealed with wax, he'd have heard that Dacey had been replying to Edmure's question about her reasoning at the time instead of trying to convince anyone that she still, in this moment, believed they couldn't have used the reinforcements.
She raised an eyebrow at Edmure's question. "You asked me why I didn't wait. I explained why and recounted what happened."

"I heard you the first time." replied Edmure curtly, himself the veteran of many a similar operation in the recent war, except that his opponents were Targaryen loyalists rather than a bunch of shitty bandits.
"Doesn't change the fact you fucked the whole thing up by ignoring the advice you were given. You threw away the lives of our men by making a rash, ill-thought decision based solely on your own stiff-necked pride. And you have the effrontery to accuse me of causing all this because I forced one man to fight a bear, instead of deserting us at the first sign of danger."
He paused, before adding sarcastically. "You might recall that he kept his life and there were no reinforcements coming on that occasion."

"Enough!" Bellowed Belric, attempting to break up his squabbling siblings. He had hear enough, from both sides. It took considerable effort for him to not turn both Edmure and Dacey over his knee and discipline them like children.
"You're uncle lives by the grace of our Maester, and the two of you are arguing about who's responsible? You're both fucking idiots." Learning of Edmure's actions while facing Olaf was unsettling to Belric. He had never known Edmure to be so callous with the lives of other men. Did he value his own life so greaty that he disregarded honor? Ontop of that, to learn Dacey had taken command of the hunting party, risking the lives of Belric's men, was infuriating. He looked at them with such disappointment, it was surprisng they did not melt from the heat of his stare.
