(+1 Civil Engineering)
Qhorin doesn't find anything strange but his knowledge of architecture does help him figure out the minimum number of hearths to light in order to properly heat the cavernous hall without it being ruinous. In the coming months, this should save a great deal of firewood and coin.

The Mason grunted as he did the calculations. Fuck yeah efficiency. He'd write up his thoughts and put em down for... Wait shit, the lady and lord were gone. Edmure? Too important for something like this. Or that steward, he seemed intelligent enough and caring about costs. He'd go to him.
He'd leave the hall for now.

A handful of petitioners present their cases to the castellan, but it is a short time before a knight in full plate forces his way to the front of the line, dust of the road on his face from hard riding. He wore a cloak carrying the crest of House Vance of Atranta; quartered, a green dragon on a white field and a white tower on a black field.
"Lord Roger Vance of Atranta!" a herald announces.

Edmure had remained seated for most of the small-folk petitioners - which consisted of the usual disputes over land and property, but as soon as the new arrival's identity had been established, he rose from his seat to greet the knight, noting his dishevelled state. This was not the usual leisurely arrival of one of their vassals.
"Lord Roger! Your appearance here is....unexpected. Is something amiss?"

" My appearance here in unexpected?" the martial lord inquired, looking around the hall as if he thought he was in the middle of a dream. "I send Lady Danelle a bloody conspiracy of desperate ravens two moons ago, with no reply, then come here to be greeted by new banners and a new ruling house for the God's Eye and I'm the one unexpected? I don't mean to lecture, but coming from a member of a noble house that were once kings in these parts, should the logical first step of a new lord not be to be inform his blasted vassals?" ![](http://2015.tiff-jp.net/news/en/files/2015/09/m_LAST-KNIGHTS.jpg)

Edmure suppressed a smile, thinking briefly of his own proposal to visit their new vassals to Belric, which had been rejected.
"Unexpected in terms of your arrival at Harrenhal." replied Edmure calmly, He beckoned to a servant. "Wine for Lord Roger. And quickly. One of our best from the cellar."
After the servant had hurried away to fetch wine, he turned to Lord Roger. The last thing the Blackforts needed this early in their occupation of Harrenhal was an upset vassal. He decided to try and mollify the lord.
"On behalf of my brother Lord Belric, I apologise my lord for our tardiness in notifying you. There has been much to do since our arrival at Harrenhal and unfortunately my brother was summoned by Lord Tully to Riverrun. He departed only a short time ago. I am his younger brother Ser Edmure Blackfort, Castellan of Harrenhal." He held out a hand.

(That'd be a Charm roll, of which you have 0)
"If only my new lord's lack of common courtesy was my most pressing concern at the moment," Lord Vance remarked, turning down the offered wine, leaving the servant standing there awkwardly with the goblet. "Care to tell me what in the seven bloody hells befell Lady Danelle or why none of my dozens of missives were answered?"

Edmure indicated to the servant to place the wine on the table.
"I'm unaware of any missives sent to you or received from you in our time here, my lord. Lady Lothson was slain by a group of her knights, before we arrived." Edmure did not go into the reasons why.
"That is most likely the reason why your missives were unanswered."

Lord Roger cursed vehemently under his breath.
"And once more, that did not seem like something worth informing her former bannermen of? What sort of mummer's farce are you running here?" he inquired, before shaking his head and waving the question off. "Never mind, there are more pressing matters and dire straits to contend with. An annoyance in my lands has become a crisis. Have you the authority to deal with it or must my people suffer while we wait for your lord brother to return?"

Having heard the Lord was holding court, Gerdy thought it would be as a good a time as any to ask for a job. She stood at the back of the Great Hall, Warrior and Stranger at her sides, patiently listening to political jargon far to complex for her understanding.
She would wait for the right time to step in and introduce herself.

"That depends on the nature of your crisis." replied Edmure calmly. "I act with Lord Belric's authority in his absence, but I have no intention of acting beyond my bounds, while he is gone." He smiled. "For example if your crisis requires me to renounce fealty to Lord Tully on behalf of Harrenhal, then that obviously won't be happening, as that is my brother's decision. Perhaps first, you should explain to me what is happening, and then we can decide if and how I can assist you."

"Only oath you need to concern yourself with is the one to protect your vassals," Lord Vance replied curtly. "Five years of war brought no shortage of opportunists in the chaos and Lord Smallwood of Acorn Hall, a vassal of Lord Piper of Pinkmaiden, was among them. Not a day into the war and his knights began nipping at the borders, a few acres here and a few there, under the guise of securing their lands against Blackfyre invasion. We fought them off, sending them running time and time again, protecting my lands in Lady Lothston's name as I was charged. Then Redgrass came and though victorious, we lost more knights than we could afford and Smallwood jumped at the chance to claim large tracts of land. Still, we fought them off, a Vance knight worth ten of any other lord's. That was, until a few months back, when we noticed their ranks bolstered by Piper knights. We don't have the men or resources to force back a high lord, so I sent word to Harrenhal beseeching aid to no avail. Since then, they've claimed a border village, containing a mill and food stores we were relying on for winter. Wars over, but you wouldn't be able to tell from looking at this lot; claiming the town by right of conquest, looting, raping those I took a solemn oath to protect. So I'm here now, because I've no other choice, because without aid we'll not be making it through winter."

Edmure frowned at the news. That the Pipers - responsible for the death of his father were involved made his blood rise.
"When you say Lord Smallwood's men have been bolstered by Lord Piper's knights can you give an estimate of what numbers are involved? If Harrenhal is to respond, we need to know exactly what we are dealing with. Since we have only recently arrived to set things to rights here we are somewhat underprepared. However Harrenhal cannot allow this to pass."

"Smallwood has only deployed a score at most, with at least a dozen in the village at a time" Vance replied, gritting his teeth at the thought. "Piper has a hundred at least, but we've only seen a handful mixed in with the others. It is more symbolic than practical, a message to me that the actions have his implicit approval, that he has condoned them. If one of mine kills a Piper knight, we'll have the full might of Pinkmaiden upon us the next morning. Fire must be fought with fire."
