Harrenhal is too big." replied Edmure. "But at least the Blackforts can feel relatively safe here. Safer than at Kings Landing."
He stretched his legs out. "I shall keep your words in mind Violet. Matters will become clearer when I see Belric."

"of course. I hope it goes well. Just...choose your moment wisely, Edmure." She looked anxiously at him. "You know Belric's temper."

"I know it." he replied. "I have one myself. Just more slow burning."
He rose and started to make his way to the door. "I shall let you know the result, one way or the other."

She nodded. "Thank you. Good luck."

Edmure gave Violet a wink and waved as he exited the room to climb the stairs towards Belric's solar.

On his way down the stairs after his 'meeting' with Belric, Edmure was about to go past Violet's chambers but he decided that he owed his youngest sister an explanation, before he left.
"A few moments." he said to the two guards. "I would say farewell to my sister." As he had done on his way up, he knocked at her door.

"Those weren't his lordship's orders," one of the guards replied, shaking his head. "Straight to your room to pack your things and off to the Wall. Didn't hear nothing about stops or farewells. Did you?"

"Didn't hear anything against it either." replied Edmure, loudly, knocking on her door. " I'm still the heir to Harrenhal. That is, until I take vows. Only one heartbeat away from being your Lord. My sister is shortly going to be the Lady of Harroway's Town. You think she will be pleased, not being able to farewell her brother? It will only take a few moments."

"Fine, make it quick," the guard relented.

Edmure nodded curtly, before resuming his knocking.

Violet opened her door. When she saw Edmure, her eyes lit with hope. "Did you sort things out with Belric? Come in, sit down."
She saw the guards behind him and her expression clouded with sudden surprise.
"Edmure, what's going on? Has something happened?"

"Belric has sent me to The Wall to take the Black." said Edmure shaking his head at the offer of a seat and in answer to her question. He spoke quickly, knowing his time was short. "He refused to accept my reasons for resigning as Castellan, claimed I had betrayed the family, struck me and re-broke my ribs when I defended myself against his fists. I came within a hair-breadth of losing my hand as well. He had these guards hold me down to remove it. But for some reason he changed his mind."
He gave Violet a grim smile. "It was an eventful meeting. I am here to say my farewells."

All the colour drained from Violet's face. She had cared for Belric, once, even though they were not close, but she was beginning to be frightened of him.
"Gods be good," she whispered. "That's...ridiculous! I can't see that you did anything to deserve the Wall, truly. But at least you won't be stuck in this awful place any more."
She thought for a moment. "If you like, I could ride part of the way with you. And, well, I may be the last friend you have in this family."

"I have no doubt of that." Edmure replied, agreeing with her assessment of his position in the family. "Perhaps our cousin Willem I could call a friend, but he is Belric's man and I doubt our friendship is stronger than his loyalty to him. I would not ask him to choose in any case.
He looked doubtful at her offer to ride part of the way with him. "You think Belric would allow that?"

She sighed. "I don't know. I'm beginning to see how little I truly know our big brother. But he'll lose face with me if he refuses, and the household too. I can stop before you reach the Neck, so neither one of you need worry for my safety. And besides, what could be wrong with a sister bidding farewell to a brother going far from home?"
She reached forward and impulsively hugged him. "I'll miss you, Edmure. Never forget that."
