Violet briefly considered the situation. "I wish you weren't having difficulties here, but I would be glad to have your company when I'm married to Lord Roote," she admitted. "And, truly, this is a horrid old castle anyway. I'm sure my lord's keep cannot be anywhere near as dreary. Perhaps you had better hunt bandits until I'm married, and come with me afterwards. Time away from Belric will do you both a lot of good."

"And I would just be my youngest sister's sworn sword for evermore?" said Edmure, smiling broadly, a slight teasing tone entering his voice. "I would hope your future husband would see more use for me than that."
He sat on a nearby chair and studied her for a moment. His face became more serious. "But what you say is not out of the realms of possibility I suppose. It would not just be our brother I would be away from either."

"No, exactly. You would be away from the maester too, and Jormun."
She gave him a serious look to match his own expression.
"I know you want to be more than my sworn sword, but you're hardly an old man, Edmure. There's no need to rush into anything. And I'm sure my lord Roote would not refuse you advancement, once you had proved your worth. Do you truly want to stand in Belric's shadow your whole life? If you stay at Harrenhal, that is what will happen, no matter how well you serve."

"Quite possibly." Edmure agreed. "But Belric is still our brother. Still, I had intended to serve him as best I could in the post he had gifted me. It works both ways though Violet. I expected his support in undertaking that task and that was sadly lacking in the Hall."
He eyed her. "What do you know of Lord Roote? What sort of man is he?"

She shrugged delicately. "I barely know him at all, Edmure. We spoke a while at Belric's wedding feast, but that's the only time I have actually spoken with him. Belric thinks well of him, though. I'm planning a visit to Harroway's Town though, to meet up with old friends. I'm hoping I might also have a chance to know my betrothed a little better before we're married. But..." She sighed. "Belric thinks it's too forward of me to want to spend time with my future husband."

"Too forward?" replied Edmure, raising an eyebrow at that morsel of information. "Or doesn't he trust you?"

Another shrug. "I'm not really sure. He thinks it's pushy of me to want to make Lord Roote's acquaintance more fully before we're wed. Belric and Saesha did a brave thing, marrying complete strangers. But I'm not them. I want to know my husband a little before my wedding day."
She sighed.
"Maybe Belric doesn't trust me. But he knows full well I was taught the ladylike arts at the motherhouse. I don't think I would say anything to upset Lord Roote."

"Well I can't blame you for wanting to know your future husband better." replied Edmure. "Not that it will make much difference to the end result. Whether you get to know him or not, Belric will still see you married to Lord Roote in order to cement him as an ally. I'm surprised he hasn't yet sought matches for the rest of us."

"I know. I thought I might be able to help with that, but I'm surprised Belric hasn't starting to look around for the rest of you."
She paused for a second then added "He might be more inclined to marry off the rest of you now we're back from Riverrun."

Edmure couldn't suppress a grin. "He'd want to move carefully in that case. Dacey won't go quietly in that matter. Come to think of it - neither will I. Particularly in the current circumstances."

"I suppose not. There's Alice, though. I will do my best to help find you someone you would not object to, Edmure."

Edmure laughed. "Make sure she's an heiress will you." He grinned. "I fancy ruling my own lands."

"I'll do my best. I've often thought an heiress would be good for you. Nyles too..." She broke off with a little sob. "Poor Nyles. He deserved better. But his death makes me a little afraid of Kings Landing now."

"Kings Landing is a cess-pool." said Edmure vehemently. "There are two sorts of people who live there. The players and the pieces. Nyles lost his life as one of the pieces trying to influence the play. We are better off out of there."

"Yes. I wanted to live there, once, but no longer. Even Harrenhal is better than Kings Landing, and I've never liked this castle," she admitted.
