The sept is a seven-sided building in the castle grounds. Statues of the Seven rest in alcoves on the walls. There is an altar and benches for the devout. The current septon is Jared.

A house knight entered and approached the Stranger. He removed his helm and knelt, and before long, was praying feverishly, rocking back and forth. He seemed to be crying.

After watching the man for a moment, Jared quietly approached the man, taking care not to startle him. He put a gentle hand on the man's shoulder.
"May I pray for you, friend?"

The knight looked up at him. He was a young man, perhaps just past his twentieth year, but he looked so worn and haggard by whatever troubled him. "I... Do you believe the dead can hear us, Septon?"

Jared considered the question., frowning. Septon he might be, but deep matters of theology still eluded him. He had much still to learn "On some level, mayhaps. I believe the gods can hear us, and the dead are said to be with the gods, or else in the seven hells with the Stranger."

"I... House Lothston committed... Terrible deeds. Terrible. I need to know that certain people can... Can hear us. Can hear me..."

"Who?" Jared kept his voice soft. "Which people? You may tell me about the deeds if you like."

"I..." The knight seemed at a loss of explanation, or an explanation he could utter aloud. "...I served under Ser Simon Whent. Since just before..." He couldn't finish the sentence, but his meaning was clear. Since just before we started taking and murdering children.

"I see." Jared hadn't witnessed the bloody scenes at Harrenhal first hand but he knew enough about them to understand why the knight was distressed.
"We cannot bring back the dead but we can ask forgiveness of the gods. There is peace in prayer."

"Is there? I mean... Do I deserve it?" He seemed torn by self-doubt.

"That is for the gods to decide." But even as he spoke, Jared wondered. As a knight, he had killed men who hadn't deserved it, simply because they were fighting on the other side of the battlefield. Would the gods forgive him?
"Tell me, friend, do you forgive yourself?" He rather thought not, by the man's behaviour.

"No." He seemed shocked that someone thought he might possess the vanity to do so. "I don't have the right. Ser Simon believes beicause he killed his nephew in trial by combat, that he is without sin. And if his sins are mine, I should likewise be absolved. Yet... Why do I feel such terrible shame?!"

Jared hesitated. He could not approve of Ser Symon's deeds but he knew the man had been granted victory in trial by combat so it seemed the gods did not think so ill of him.
"Even the gods cannot wipe a man's conscience clean if he thinks ill of his own deeds. I am sure you did only as you were commanded. Have you attempted an act of penance?"

He looked up at the Septon with a look of hope. "Not yet. I would not know where to begin. How might perform it?"

"/there are many forms of penance. Abstinence from a pleasure is common, as are good works. Prayer vigils are common too, though of less practical use than helping the unfortunate, of course." He favoured the man with a gentle smile. "Do any of those options appeal?"
