The knight looked up at the Stranger for a long moment. Perhaps he thought he might receive some inspiration from the statue's blank face. Eventually, he looked up at Jared. "If I commit myself to good works... If I swear off the pleasures of the flesh? Do you think I might redeem myself before I die?"

Jared tried to give the man a reassuring smile. "I think it possible, yes. The gods are kind to those who serve them well. Alternatively, you might think of taking vows, as I did."

"Unfortunately, my vows to House Blackfort mean I am bound to martial service. And our new lord and lady already seem to surpass my last mistress in conscience and competence. But I can surely find some means of contrition. Surely..."

"Penance is not meant to be easy," Jared said firmly. "The local people suffered under their previous lady. You could help me offer them comfort and ensure that none go hungry."

The young knight stood with a distinct spring in his step. "I would gladly assist you, Septon! Call upon Ser Callum and he will be at your side!" He appeared reinvigorated at the hope of redemption.

"I shall remember," Jared vowed. "Your desire to do good is a credit to your soul. May the gods keep you safe."

"Thank you, Septon." Ser Callum picked up his helm and after a respectful nod, left to begin the next phase of his still relatively brief life.

19th day 3rd moon
Despite his argument with his family the previous day, Edmure had slept soundly for the first time in what seemed weeks. As to whether that was from exhaustion or merely some peace of mind he didn't know. However upon his older brother's return and resumption of his Lordship, Edmure decided it was time to mourn his other brother properly. The Sept seemed the logical place.

He found Septon Jared there, lighting candles to each of the Seven. Jared turned to greet Edmure with a brief smile.
"May I be of assistance?" He asked. "Or do you simply wish to pray, ser?"

"To pray Septon." Edmure replied. "You no doubt have heard of the death of my brother. I pray the Stranger led him to one of the Seven Heavens."

"Let's assume that is the case. Your brother was so young and died doing his duty, as all men should. I cannot imagine he would deserve to suffer in the Seven Hells."
Jared lit the last candle, for the Stranger, then set aside the taper.
"Would you like to speak about your brother first, ser? Or shall I leave you to silent prayer?"

"I did not know him as well as I should have." replied Edmure. "We were too different in age and the war separated us for some years. We Blackforts are a fractured family, Septon. In more ways than one."

"I have seen that," Jared admitted. "It's a great pity."
He paused and gave Edmure a rueful glance. "I'm not the best man to advise on familial relationships, truly, but, if I had my time again I'd try to be a better friend to my kin. It's too late for me, but you've got your kin all around you and someone has to take the first step. Although...."
He hesitated a moment then added"That's not to say that it wouldn't be difficult, particularly with so many hot tempers here in Harrenhal."

"My kin?" said Edmure, reflecting bitterly on what had been said to him in the Hall. "My sister Dacey publicly calls me craven, my bastard brother says he will refuse to obey me as he regards me as a piss poor Castellan - excuse my language Septon. His wife opposes my appointment as Castellan. The Maester openly insults me in front of my kin, the servants, the household guards. My true born brother stands by, allows it to happen and then goes so far to rebuke me in public for making 'excuses', when I had made none." He shook his head, still in disbelief at Belric's reaction.
"And I still don't know what he means."
He bowed his head. "And worst of all, my other true-born brother is dead - taken by the Stranger - far too soon."

Jared shook his head. "A most unfortunate set of circumstances to be sure. I've no wish to get involved in a family quarrel but, if my opinion is sought, you may be sure I will remind your family of the bonds you all share. Then what shall you do, Ser Edmure? Take to the road as a hedge knight? The hedges treated me well enough, before I took my vows, but the life isn't for everyone, and you're brother to an important man now. It might seem strange if you were turn knight-errant."
