Edmure smiled wryly. "That was the intention. Turns out the bear preferred to hunt us."
He grimaced again and shakily rose to his feet. "So Ser Willem, what brings you to our humble abode?"

Willem nodded, with respect this time. "You have my congratulations then on not being its dinner." Willem rose with him, not wanting to seem tired or lazy."As lord Belric's cousin, I come to offer my sword to him. He has seemed preoccupied, so I have been waiting until he has a moment before introducing myself." That was a suitable excuse for Willem's uncertainty as to who Belric was of the men present.

If Edmure was surprised at Willem's revelation of their family relationship he did not show it. He had always supposed that long lost relatives from near and far would come out of the woodwork to join in their good fortune.
"Lord Belric's cousin? Indeed. Then we too are cousins. I am Lord Belric's younger brother." He studied the man for a few seconds estimating that Willem was probably a couple of years younger than himself. Whatever the case another man - and a knight to boot - was what they sorely needed. They could investigate the truth of his family connection later.
"Come. I'll introduce you to my brother. He will welcome another sword I am sure."

"And I am grateful for your willingness to introduce me to your brother. I will not forget this kindness." The last sentence was said with the slightest bite, and a brief glance at Hoster.

Hoster snorted and left the inn, he'd have to keep an eye on this one.

Edmure nodded and winked. "I'll make sure you don't." he said to Willem, as Hoster left the inn in a rush. "My uncle seems a bit put out." he said, a grin appearing on his face. He led Willem over to Belric. "Brother, this is Ser Willem Rivers. Our cousin he claims. Whether he is or not we can establish later, but an extra blade may come in handy in the next few days."

He gave Willem an inquisitive look. "Cousin huh? Who were your parents, and why have you come to Harrenhal?" Belric had always been skeptical of new faces.

He gave Willem an inquisitive look. "Cousin huh? Who were your parents, and why have you come to Harrenhal?" Belric had always been skeptical of new faces. "I believe he was hoping I would buy him a drink. He failed to persuade me to waste my coin on a man so drunk another could hardly make a difference." Willem replied to Edmure as they walked over to Belric. "Regretfully my lineage descends from your uncle Hoster, my lord." Willem replied. "Whether he knows I am related to him or not I could not say. But I swear on the Seven I speak truthfully. I could tell you who my mother was, if you wish, but I have no wish to bring any disrepute on your fine house, and well, the politest thing I can say about my mother was that she was not highborn." He looked Belric in the eye. "I never had any wish to be a burden upon my kin, and in my youth I would have been nought but another mouth to feed, and a bastard at that. Now though, I am a knight, and I can earn my keep." He paused. "And, well, speaking honestly, my lord, Harrenhal is a rather large holding. I thought you might be in need of reliable men."

Belric had to consciously close his mouth after it went slack hearing news that Willem was Hoster's offspring. The fact that there was a woman who could bed his uncle seemed to shock Belric to the core. However, he figured the event leading to Willem's birth had to be of a business nature and not a mistake made by love. That, or Willem was the product of something much darker. Belric was not naive enough to think Hoster was incapable of rape.
"Hosters kid? I imagine that would be a difficult upbringing wether you knew him or not." Belric said, grasping Willem by the shoulder assuringly. "However, you are a knight. True to your heritage indeed, and with a bastard name no less. Blood begets blood, cousin. I am in great need of that sword."
Belric nearly returned to what he was doing, but stopped himself, feeling the need to set precedent. "Do I need to worry about you and Hoster killing one another?"

Edmure laughed at Belric's question and clapped Willem on the shoulder, grimacing at the same time as a stab of pain coursed through his left arm.
"I understand completely how Willem might feel, but surely our new-found cousin would understand that both gods and man alike condemn kinslaying, No need to curse this place further with yet another heinous act that would bring their wrath down on us. And I don't necessarily mean that of the gods either."

Willem nodded, choosing not to comment further on his past. "Blood begets blood. I am yours to command, my lord." Willem hesitated slightly before answer Belric's follow up question. "I have no love for the man, I'll make no secret of that. But I am a knight, my vows mean something, and I am no murderer. I would be more worried about Hoster, were I you, my lord." As Edmure clapped him on the shoulder Willem nodded. "It's not the gods I fear, so much as becoming the sort of man I myself despise. So long as Hoster leaves me to my business, and ceases to assail me with unprovoked threats, you will have no problems from me."

"Leave Hoster to us." said Edmure nodding in approval at Willem's assurances. "Guard dogs are often kept on a tight leash and released when needed. This one will be too. Just don't pat him."

"You needn't worry about that, Ser. The man has wanted nothing to do with me his entire life. I see no reason why I should concern myself with his affairs." Willem said, with more than a note of bitterness in his voice.

Edmure looked at him sympathetically. "Nor do you have to. You have other family now." He pointed to the meat they had brought back from there hunting expedition. "Eat Willem. Now that you have joined us, there will be work for you to do."

Now that you have joined us, there will be work for you to do." Willem appeared impressed by Edmure's display of compassion. "I suppose that is true." he said, sounding as if he weren't quite sure it was. It seemed too good to him to be welcomed so warmly after struggling to earn a place in the world throughout his life. "I thank you for sharing your meat with me. I will prove to you in the coming days that you have not made a mistake in showing me your trust."
