The funeral of a High Septon is historically a messy affair. Both the Smallfolk and highborn are expected to grieve, even those who may not have necessarily followed the Seven to begin with. All roads to the Great Sept are lined with Goldcloaks to keep the traffic and anxiety manageable. Ironically, crime doubles in the city during such a pious day due to the City Watch's limited ability to respond.
In the first royal carriage rode King Daemon I and his Queen across from Nyles and Alice Blackfort. Beside the carriage, in speaking distance, rode Ser Richard Blackfort and Ser Harlan Hawick. Fireball rode ahead, while the other Kingsguard escorted the rest of the family.
His Grace wore Blackfyre today, but not his armor. He looked somberly out the window at the approaching sept. "They really should ring bells when a High Septon dies... These people need a reflection of their grief. Help them humanize their royal family." He took his wife's hand and squeezed it as he thought aloud. "I'll issue an edict, I think."

Nyles watched out the window. The fat priest has poorly reflected the true faith. The gods had called him to account, or someone had. He smiled at his sister and the queen but stayed silent unless spoken to.

Ser Harlan had been quiet for most of the way, despite being notorious for his endless supply of small talk. He looked at the crowds around them as they proceeded towards the Great Sept, all the while wondering how the Blackforts had managed to get so far in so little time. A month ago, they were still lowly knights of the Black Gate. Now, two of them were accompanying King and Queen of Westeros in their carriage, and Harlan had been appointed to the queen's own security detail. Though immensely honoured, he hoped he'd still be able to be at the top of his original job.

Ser Richard sat on his horse naturally, eyeing the crowds that lined the city streets. As the carriage set off he set his horse next to Harlans, eyes scanning the crowd and goldcloaks for trouble or dissonance (Observation 45)
"Greetings Ser" Richard says "I do not believe we have met before, though I know that you are the sworn sword of my niece. I am Ser Richard."

Harlan looked at the Kingsguard and gave him a respectful nod. "Ser Richard," he greeted. "We haven't, though I have heard much about your great deeds in the war. I am Ser Harlan Hawick, from Saltpans. I fought alongside your nephews and niece in Lord Roote's army. It is good to meet you," he said.

Though others certainly gave more in this war than I ever did. I am lucky to have made it through in one piece. It is good that Alice has a knight to be with her in these times. Mayaps we could spar sometime in the yard when time permits? I would test the sword arm that guards my niece." he says, winking at Alice inside the carriage

"I get the feeling you're selling yourself short, ser," replied Harlan with a slight smile, though he found that the white knight's modesty was a good thing. He nodded. "Gladly. I try to make a point of spending at least a couple of hours a day in the yard."
He paused as he watched the crowd. "It must be a great honour, being appointed to your order. Have you gotten accustomed to the your life yet? I imagine the pace of it to be quite different," he said after a while.

(Success) The people of King's Landing are restless. More than a few commoners are staring at Richard with fierce intent. At least one man has sown a red dragon into his clothes, signaling his support for the old regime. Richard is too new to the city to be sure, but he is certain there was far less graffiti when he first visited this way during his nephew's wedding. Seven pointed stars have been drawn over doors. He can just make out thin white squiggles beside fat red squiggles.

I imagine the pace of it to be quite different," he said after a while. "I fear I have not yet, though even staying in one location for longer than a fortnight was unusual for me. It is..." Richard voice trails off as he examines the crowd, and he keeps a eye on the man with the red dragon "The crowd is disturbed. What are those symbols drawn on the walls? I recognize the star, but there's something more about them." He looks carefully at the 'squiggles' (observation 45)

(Success) It's a depiction of the High Septon (The red signifies his support of House Targaryen, the roundness signifies his... roundness) being murdered by a member of the Kingsguard.

"I don't know," said Harlan, taking a closer look at the drawings as well. He'd heard certain rumours, but refused to believe them. "Loyalists?" he guessed in a low voice, not wanting the people in the carriage to hear. He returned to watching the crowd for any suspicious activity.
(40 Observation, if needed)

(Success. 1 Point in Observation awarded to both knights.) The man with the dragon sigil on his coat is a blonde man, thin but not malnourished. He follows the royal parade from behind the crowd, tapping certain people on the shoulders as he passes. Upon noticing the two knights'attention, he vanishes into an alley.

Richard keeps his eyes on the men that were chosen by the man while he talks softly to Harlan "see that one? The red dragon. I would pursue, except we cannot leave the king and queen. These rumors are a pox to us, slander. Obviously some believe these lies."

It only really hit Alice now how far the had risen - how her own station had improved so much. Sitting in the royal carriage with the king and queen, crowds of people surrounding them. She'd been very nervous that morning when servants had come and putting her in a suitable black dress. She'd not even been given a choice but she supposed that was good after all; her own dresses had been far from good enough.
She smiled at her brother briefly but remained quiet as well, not wishing to say anything potentially stupid.

The Queen spent the carriage ride waving and smiling benevolently at the gathered crowd of smallfolk, keeping her composure even as a few yelled that she was a foreign whore.
