At hearing the insults Alice frowned. Those people out there didn't even know the queen, didn't know how nice she was. It was unfair. She wanted to speak up but realised that there was probably nothing she could say that would make a difference.

"We're almost there. Alice, keep close to us. My wife tells me you're comfortable bridging the gap between low and highborn, just like your brother here. Inside we'll encounter both. Have faith the Kingsguard will protect us and we'll be safe. I don't intend to stay here long." He called out the window, "Richard, stay by me."

"Of course, your grace." Richard replies, eyes still scanning "I've seen a few of the red so far." Referring to the red dragon.

Richard keeps his eyes on the men that were chosen by the man while he talks softly to Harlan "see that one? The red dragon. I would pursue, except we cannot leave the king and queen. These rumors are a pox to us, slander. Obviously some believe these lies." Harlan had noticed. "Should we tell the goldcloaks to apprehend this man if they saw him?" he inquired.

"Fair enough," Harlan said and continued to keep a watchful eye on the crowd, as well as the goldcloaks after this piece of information.

Nyles watched over the crowds idly, but his eyes focused on the most prominent of one of the insult callers. He tried to remember where he saw him and what he looked like. He could get his new friend to help find him later. No one called Her Grace a whore.

(Success. 1 Point Added to Observation.) A fat man, bearded, balding. He stands in the front row and towers over those beside him. He appears to be less of a fanatic and more of a common lout, judging by the self-satisfied grin on his face.
***
The royal caravarn halted before the Great Sept. The Lord Commander rode to the King's carriage, peered into it, and declared, "None of them appear dangerous, but you're not exact going to recieve a second coronation in there. A few of the lords are inside. Reyne, Hightower, Fatterwell, the Dondarrion woman, the Florent who can't smell the flowers on his own damn banner. Lot of Smallfok though. Mostly merchants, some officers from the City Watch, a few hedge knights. There are a few of the common rabble, but harmless. Children, old ladies, , some of the castle staff we trust."
"How are you calling him Fatterwell after all these years?" Inquired the King with a hint of annoyance.
"How does a man earn the name fatterwell after all these years? Anyway, step lively, Your Grace. Your Highness, stay close to the King and Ser Richard, they'll keep you safe. The rest of you are with Ser Harlan. I'll tend to the other carriages. It'll be safe to move around inside." Then he rode off.
Outside the carriage, the plaza was filled with onlookers, at least a third of the city. Most of them appeared to be genuinely mourning, and were praying aloud to whichever one of the Seven they felt appropriate. There were not so many protestors here in comparison to their path, but there still enough angry looks foolowing Ser Richard and the other whitecloaks. Goldcloaks stod in the streets keeping back the Daemon took his wife by the arm and lead them up the many stairs to the building itself, with their party trailing behind.
*******
Inside the Sept, the royal party is greeted by one of the Most Devout, a thin, hawkish man in rather expensive robes. "Your Grace, we must apologize for the mob outside. We sent Septons to try to calm them. I just want you to know that no one in this temple to the Seven could ever think you responsible of such a heinous crime. All of the Kingsguard are held in such high esteem for their valor and piety."
Both Blackfort males and Ser Harlan could remember at least one occasion when Fireball had flipped out on a septon trying to minister to the dead in the middle of his fucking battlefield, because they were blocking his archers.
"Of course. My Grand Maester recalled several incidents under past kings. Even Baelor faced opposition when the people thought he might combine the titles of King and Holy Septon. Walk with me, and we'll see what we can figure out..." The King followed the wouldbe High Septon into the central hall, where his predecessor would be on displat.
Nearby in the foyer, Lord Arnold Reyne and his daughter Myrcella were talking to the noseless groom from the wedding. Both men were in a heated discussion, while Myrcella looked frightfully bored until she saw until she saw Alice, whom she promptly tackled with a hug. "You made it!" After (eventually) letting go, she turned to Nyles. "And this must be your handsome brother Myles! Tell me, Myles, has the King taught you how to joust yet?" In a conspiratorial tone usually reserved for a much younger boy, "Has the King betrayed any of his secrets yet?, Myles? You can tell me!"

Obnoxious and fat. Perfect. Nyles does as bid, looking about as they enter the Great Sept. When he's attacked by the strange lady he is confused, holding himself from looking to his sister and clenching his left hand unconsciously. "Of course I can joust," he said in the offended tone of someone who is lying but annoyed someone would make them. "The king's big secret to me is that I'm almost certain to be a massive disappointment," he joked. The king hasn't said that, but neither had Fireball. Fireball would have never considered the possibility that he had enough potential to ever actually disappoint.

"Myrcella!" Alice said with a smile, squeezing her friend back and for the moment forgetting the insult the girl had thrown at her; she had been drunk and bitter, just married to a man she didn't love and who was from a very different world than her. She would of course mention it at some point but not in anger.
She laughed at Myrcella getting her brother's name wrong. "It's Nyles, Myrcella! And no, I bet you he can't joust! I doubt they teach you when you're at war - why would they?"

"Because that's what young lords do. They play with their sticks and ram each other with them. Papa and Robb practiced all the time at home before Robb left home to be with Daemon."
She turned to Nyles. "And I don't believe that for a moment...one day I bet you'll join my brother on the Kingsguard. Unless you like girls, that is."

"I left home to fight," Nyles said. "I hope to joust much better soon." He looked to the girl trapped in a bad marriage. Poor her. "I don't think the Kingsguard is in my future," he said. "I don't think the skill to be on the Kingsguard will ever be in my future."

"Riding in a carriage with the king and queen wasn't in our future, or so we though," Alice said, making fun of her brother's repeated use of the phrase. "And look at us now." She giggled.

Harlan, who'd been briefly observing Lords Reyne and Florent, returned to scanning the crowd. He'd listened to the Blackforts' conversation with half an ear, and would gladly have offered to train Nyles, had it not been slightly out of place now that he was strictly on duty. Besides, he most likely lacked the time for that now. Perhaps once he'd grown accustomed to his new duties, he'd bring the offer to the young lad.
