He turned to the mason. "Well Qhorin? Anything look promising to you?" "Seen lot of good wood" says the builder "but no stone so far. Any quarry round here will be obvious, with Harrenhal so close. Must've cut thousands of blocks for it."

It occurs to the master mason that any stone deposits would likely be to the northwest of their domain, rather than south by the lakeshore. They may find clay or loam deposits in the current area though.

Edmure thought for a moment, trying to envisage the map he had consulted before they had left Harrenhal.
"So, closer to the Trident then?" He scanned the surroundings to see if there were any obvious hills they could make for.

"Something like that. Close to big water gets you the softer earths, have to thread between them to find the hard spits." Qhorin said in reply

It was lucky they hadn't come so far thought Edmure.
"I'll be guided by you Qhorin." he said.
Edmure clicked his tongue, pulled on the reins of his horse, issued an order to the rest of the men, took one last look at the carcass of Olaf and moved north-west toward the Trident. They would be moving closer to the place of the Blackfort's origins, Lord Harroway's Town and the lands of Lord Roote. At least the landscape would be more familiar to him.

"My eyes are fucked, but yeah sure" said the man on the mule as he turned it to follow the horses "Just go til we find the stone. That'll do." Soggy ground was useless to him here. Surprised that castle was still standing as it was two hundred years later on such ground. Maybe... nah. But he'd have to check the foundations. See what anchored such a thing, maybe find the foundation stone.

Willem allowed Edmure to command and Qhorin to speak of his specialty. He simply rode in silence following Edmure's horse.

They moved north-west for some hours, leaving Harrenhal some way behind them. Edmure rode keeping his eyes peeled for anything unusual. He occasionally made small talk with Willem and Qhorin, talking about his brother's plans for Harrenhal, politics, Kings Landing, his family and other topics that arose.

Qhorin listens to the noble respectfully, but keeps his answers short and to the point. Mix yourself up too much in a noble family, and you're like as not to get a sword in the gut one way or another. Then again, being anywhere near nobles had you likely getting killed. He missed Lannisport already.

As they moved, north-west Edmure also took the opportunity to speak to any small folk they came across asking them about the harvest, their feudal dues to Harrenhal, bandits, and of course he made any enquiries as to the location of any stone reserves. He expected many of the small folk to be reluctant to talk to a party of armed men, so he made it clear who he was and why they should talk to him.

(Failed)
The peasants look at Edmure as if he has two heads when he inquires about the harvest, reminding him that it's winter. They do point him to the north-west, saying there is a large abandoned quarry there, that was burned down during the war, that the very blocks used to build Harrenhal were shaped from the stones there. They call keep quiet when questioned about bandits and most seem eager for him to fuck off.

Edmure forced himself not to roll his eyes when the small folk he spoke to informed him that it was winter and that there was no harvest yet. He pointed out gently that surely they expected a harvest at some point and what that was likely to be like, now that peace had occurred. However he brightened at the news of the existence of the quarry.
He glanced at Willem when the small folk clearly didn't want to talk about bandits.
Nonetheless there was little more they could do, other than ask for directions to the abandoned quarry and move on. If there was a problem with bandits that would have to wait for another time. Or if the problem came to them.

Qhorin gets off his mule and stretches whenever he see's Edmure wants to chit-chat with the locals. He'll ask aside when they're about to move on about the bandits, when the Blackforts have moved. He's not a noble of any kind, and figures he might have a better chance of getting them to open up without a sword on his belt. "So, roads safe or are there bastards in the woods? We can kee pit hush hush, but might be able to draw it to the attention of the new lord o Harrenhal. He'd want to kill any fuckers that mess with his new people. Thinks it might make him popular." (Also failed. This is embarrassing guys. You both rolled under 20)
The peasants simply stare at Qhorin, as if perplexed that he thought taking off his sword would make them think he wasn't with the highborns.
