She had never met anyone this contrary in her life.
"Yes, and to do that I feel like we need to come to a sort of understanding with one another and the best way to do that is to get to know one another a bit better."

While Edmure found it difficult to forget Belric's revelation that Saesha had not wanted him on the council and had also tried to have him removed as Castellan, he also reminded himself that he had given Belric an undertaking.
"What sort of understanding do you seek my lady?" he said in a polite tone, that to him seemed somewhat forced but to anyone else would seem to be natural.
"I'm sure my brother has told you everything he knows about me. As he would have with all the members of our family"

"No. He has not. We haven't talked about you much. My opinion of you has be forged from what I have seen, which are you actions at the gate and your refusal to accept the limitations of your position, they are the only things I can judge you by, what my eyes see." She commented honestly, "You make it sound as if there is more to know than what he could tell me?"
"I am sure we are both dedicated to making this place as great as we can, though, which seems like a good place to start." she was beginning to think this was a waste of time, considering how unforthcoming he was being, "I am happy to get to know the person behind these incidents though. Your brother seemed to think the showing was not indicative of why he thinks so highly of your abilities.

Edmure sighed.
"I can only repeat yet again what most already know. I fought in the war, two years in the lands around Riverrun - some in front of the walls itself - eventually commanding a squadron of siege engines and sappers. The siege itself was long and bloody and we on the outside, lived largely off the land. To that end I was sometimes put in command of a company of men and ordered to forage off the land. That involved taking holdfasts and other small strongholds sometimes by leading a direct assault and sometimes by subterfuge. Once each stronghold fell, I was to ensure that the surrounding lands were organised in such a way that regular supply of food and other resources that we needed, were sent to the siege lines. I guess I was reasonably good at the task because eventually my commander thought that it would be better if I used my gained experiences at Riverrun itself. I was placed in command of a squadron of siege engines and sappers and told to do what I could to help breach the walls as I had breached walls at other strongholds. Then the order came to raise the siege."
His face hardened. "Even though we ended controlling the lands around Riverrun, we could not take the castle itself. It remains one of my biggest regrets. Nevertheless His Grace still saw fit to commend me on my efforts in Kings Landing at your wedding feast. He told me that I had been instrumental at the Siege of Riverrun and that because of my actions Medgar Tully was never able to rally the Riverlands against the Blackyres."
He smiled thinly at the memory. "I suppose that must mean I was quite competent at what I did. By appointing me as his Castellan, it appears my brother also shares that view."

"Oh, that I already knew," she commented, "that is what you've done, doesn't tell me an awful lot about the man behind those actions. My brother congratulated you? That's no small thing. Did TheLord Hand say much?"
She was of the opinion that Daemon wanted to be liked so much he would likely say something similar to Tully himself should they ever meet, that didn't reduce what Edmure did though, in fact it made him more of a puzzle. She couldn't marry the man he described and the man she saw at the gate together,.

"You should be able to make your own deductions my lady." he replied. "It is not up to me to decide what you must think."
His fingers curled around the stem of the glass on the arm of his chair and gave a brief shrug..
"I'm not sure what you want me to tell you. Leading significant numbers of men in successful assaults against holdfasts in the Riverlands over two years should tell you something should it not? The successful regular supply of food and other resources from those taken strongholds to the siege lines at Riverrun? I fought steadfastly for the Blackfyre cause and for much of it at the side of my brother, supporting him as best I could. To that endeavor, I came close to death after Redgrass Field four years ago. Those things alone should indicate what manner of man I might be."

"Do you want to reconcile?" She asked shortly, mask of a smile dropping for a moment.

Edmure looked mildly puzzled. He shifted in his chair.
"Reconcile my lady? As far as I'm concerned our discussion at the gate amounts to a minor disagreement. You make it seem as if we are deadly enemies. Unless there is anything else I should be aware of?"

If that was a minor disagreement, she knew everything she ever would. The lives of ten men plus his family was a little matter to this man it seemed, as well as a poor showing that had cost his reputation dearly.
"Oh no Edmure, I think you and I want the same thing, to support your brother in making this place as great as it can be, when I say reconcile, I more mean get one another on the same page, the reason I made the council was so that we could all move forward clearly and directly, all of one mind and goal, I want to be sure there is no... grey between us."

It seemed to Edmure that what Saesha was implying was that the council existed only to promote her own ideas and goals for Harrenhal.
"And you consider we are not on the same page in this matter?" he asked.

Edmure is wrong about that, not that Saesha knows he's thinking it to tell him so. She genuinely put the council together for the reasons he said, so they could organise themselves effectively.
"What matter is that?" she stood and shook her head, "I do not have the time to waste dancing round issues here with you Edmure. Perhaps we can talk more when Lord Blackfort and I return." If the place still stood.

"Supporting my brother in making this place as great as it can be." replied Edmure. "That is my wish also."
He shook his head in exasperation. "In that, I'm not aware there is an issue. Brothers squabble on occasions Saesha. Do not take that as disloyalty. Belric is the Lord of Harrenhal. It is he who has raised our family to the heights of great lords and dragged us along with him. Do you think I am not aware of our good fortune?"
He showed her out, shaking his head after he closed the door. He still had no idea what that was all about.

///////////////////////////////////////////
2nd day of the 3rd moon of the year.
Edmure returned to his chambers after his meeting with Valarr and Qhorin. Pouring himself his favourite ale, he sat at his desk and wrote out two copies of two orders - one ordering the stepping up of patrols around the streets and lanes of Harrentown and the other authorising funds (1 Gold) to be advanced to Qhorin for the repair of the palisade around Harrentown and deepening of the ditch outside the palisade.
Summoning a servant he instructed the orders to be delivered to the appropriate people. After the servant hurried away, Edmure leaned back in his chair and briefly closed his eyes, occasionally sipping his ale. He wondered briefly how the diplomatic mission to the Smallwoods was going .

On cue, a guardsman returns to inform the castellan that Jon has been rendered incapacitated by catastrophic bowel distress. Edmure can either ride out to take direct command of the negotiations (as was arguably his responsibility in the first place as acting lord) or let the remaining trio deal with it themselves.

Edmure sighed inwardly as he received the news. Jon and Hoster incapacitated, most of his other kinsmen either at Riverrun or Kings Landing...his sister out on some hunt with her whereabouts and return unknown. He thought for a long moment as the guardsmen waited expectantly. There was nothing for it, but to assume command of the mission himself.
"Ride back." he said to the guardsmen. "Tell them I am on my way." As the guardsmen exited, Edmure pulled out writing implements.
Jon may have been ill, but that would not stop him issuing orders from his bed or perhaps seeing to matters from a litter in the main hall. He wrote out an order to be copied and posted over the castle, placing his uncle Jon in command of Harrenhal in his absence. It made sense - he was the steward. Failing that it would have to be Hoster.
