The squire has a mission and determination and time in the evenings, so he begins his investigation into this merchant with too much time on his hands. He invites Harlan and his uncle along if they get an opportunity.

After a few days of being a good and non criminal squire, Nyles starts his amateur search for a mystery merchant rebel inciter. He takes three silver coins and a handful of coppers down to the docks, reasoning that that is where merchants ply their trade most frequently. He spends a long time debating bringing his sword but it makes him too noticeable and this is just a recon mission, so his dagger suffices. He doesn't wash after training in the yard so he has some grime and swear to make him look more authentically plebeian.
As asking for loyalists to the old regime would be unfathomablynstupid even for a fourteen year old, he goes about, listening for drunk men or women speaking too loosely about the new regime.

(Success) He doesn't make it out of sight of the Red Keep when he finds a man wearing the robes of a Septon, red dragon sewn on, preaching to a small mob. It's almost word for word a recitation of the old High Septon's words, with the same charges. Treason, warmongering, kingslaying, kinslaying, and so on. A few people cheer, though many just quietly listen, nodding their heads in agreement. Nyles can see a group of gold cloaks gathering nearby, but making no effort to break up the demonstration.

Nyles scans the people in the crowd. He'll follow the septic at a distance when he's done talking to see where he goes, and looks for people meeting Benjy's description.

(Failed on both counts.) After his speech, the septon mingles with members of the crowd before taking his leave down an alley. Nyles manages to keep up with him, and eventually, finds himself in Flea's Bottom. Along the way, they pass several septs which the holy man seems to actively avoid by walking on the other side of the street. In time, they see another rally with a different pro-Targaryen septon, this one also wearing the red dragon, and speaking almost the exact same words as his comrade. After the speech ends, the two preachers meet and begin chatting. The second man looks directly at Nyles before the first gestures not to. Clearly, the squire has been made.

Damn, he thought to himself. He looks about and heads down a few streets to head to a tavern that's plenty crowded, order an ale, put his hood up on his head a bit more and wait before returning to the Red Keep.

Having heard the septons could be false, Nyles tries a different tactic. He musters his courage and wears more suitable clothing for the king's squire, but not a black dragon, and heads to one of the many septs the false septon had avoided. He has always been a fairly devout young man, and he has a seven pointed star medallion on his neck. He enters the holy place and asks to see the septon.

A thin, graying man with a long beard appears before him, wearing the clothes of a septon a small figurine of the Smith around his neck. "How may I assist you, my child?" Around him, commoners are enjoying pieces of bread or praying to a small shelf of seven similar figurines.

The squire performed his courtesies as he was greeted. "Septon," he said, " I am Nyles Blackfort," he said, deciding honesty may be the best policy. "These last weeks have seen many changes to our kingdom, our city, and more. I believe that peace is paramount, peace and security. But," he looked about, "I've seen many who are using the Faith, the pillar of moral society in the land, many who are using that moral authority to foment violence and crime across King's Landing." He looked at the old man. "I cannot believe that the true followers of the gods can condone such action. I believe it far more likely that those seeking violence and chaos are acting on their own interests, and those interests are against our city and those who are most vulnerable." He waved to the poor about him. "I want to help make things right."

The Septon stroked his beard as the squire spoke, looking at him thoughtfully. When Nyles had finished his introduction, he simply signalled to be followed. In a small backroom which might as well have been a closet, the old Septon sat on a crate of sweet candles used for ceremonies. He gestured to another such crate. "Please have a seat. My name is Gareth and I'd rather not have this conversation in front of the others."

Nyles follows him to the room. "Septon Gareth," he said. "I appreciate you taking the time to talk to me. I'm aware of the danger these men pose."

"King's Landing is large, but not so large that we servants of the Seven don't know each other. I have seen these strangers, with their red dragons and seven pointed stars stitched on. I personally told the Goldcloaks that these men were imposters, yet they still walk the streets. A few get beaten to a fine pulp to keep up appearances, but most are set free, as long as they don't offend the highborn. Septon Walder, who ministers another Sept not far from here, tells me that he has personally gone to the Most Devout, and they informed him that the Small Council was aware of the situation. But without a new High Septon, the faith cannot issue a formal edict informing people of the truth! People still think we are all plotting to overthrow His Grace and are cheering us for it! I've broken up three brawls in the Sept over this Targaryen madness..."

"Quite a problem," Nyles said. He thought to himself as to why sedition would be accepted and came to the logical conclusion shortly thereafter. "I assure you the Crown desires nothing but unity with the Faith. Did these men arrive after Prince Maekar fled, or before?" He asked.

"They didn't appear until just nafter the death of His Holiness, on the night of the great wedding ceremony."

The squire thought on that. Clearly they had been positioned beforehand to poison the king's chances at gaining the city's loyalty. "I see. You wouldn't happen to know if they have any specific areas they seem to prefer, would you?" He rises and bows. "I greatly appreciate your help, Septon," he said.
