Jormun grinned at the cabinet, moving over to browse the selection. "We should open it to the public again. Go out on hunts, catch the animals, then bring them back and have warriors that volunteer fight them. Give them a small dagger, or some other weapon to make it a challenge, and let people bet on their survival. You win, you get half of the gold, Harrenhal takes the other half. You lose?" Jormun shrugs as he looks at his brother. "The bounty on the animal gets higher for the next fight and we find a new volunteer. They could even fight each other if they choose, or when we have criminals set to death, throw them into the pit. Could also handle duels somewhere other than the yard."
Pausing to take a breath, Jormun grabbed a random bottle from the cabinet. "The overall point is it will provide entertainment for the smallfolk, money for us, fame and practice for the warriors, and attention to House Blackfort."

"You, of all people, want to open the bear pit?" Belric was honestly surprised, but also intrigued by Jormun's apparent lack of self preservation. "Are you planning on fighting?" He could hardly talk economics right now, his brother had very likely lost his mind. He needed to get to the bottom of the morality behind Jormun's decision before he could discuss gold.

Jormun grinned at his brother again, his own enthusiasm at the idea overwhelming any chance of noticing the uncertainty. "Olaf was a mighty bear that Dacey and I worked very hard to kill, which gave me an interesting thought when I saw our pit. The smallfolk already think better of us for taking care of such a beast, so why not capture them and give aspiring knights and warriors their chance? I likely won't fight in the pit; it would be my job to capture the beasts in the first place, but there are many upsides. Where is the downside, brother? It's not like we'd be throwing slaves in there for our amusement- everything is voluntary, for fame and money. Strong motivators, those."

"You're crazy, bastard. Where's the glory in hunting bears for other men to kill?" He shook his head. "I am not saying it's a bad idea, I have considered it before. However this is not the conversation I expected."
Belric motioned to the bottle Jormun had chosen, still clinging to it greedily. "Pour me a drink already."

Jormun pours them a pair of drinks, still grinning at the Lord. "The first person to ride a horse was probably called crazy, now look at us. Don't even think about the first person to drink milk. Besides, capturing game is much harder than killing, because you can't simply fill it with arrows and steel, you must tire it, trap it, all without causing serious harm. It is more dangerous, but also my duty. For the fighters, the glory is even greater in the kill, because a cornered beast will fight all the fiercer."

Belric listened to his bastard brother as he made a pitch any merchant would be proud of. Jormun's reasons were sound, a bear pit was a fine addition to Harrenhal in Belric's opinion. Though, the Lord assumed the Lady would have something to say about it, wether for or against he did not know.
"Aye brother, a pit would serve us well. Though perhaps now the time is premature, considering all the death this castle has seen lately. The men are hardly thinking about glory, they are thinking about their families." Belric glanced at the map on his desk, it was laid out and marked in preparation for a journey. "I have been summoned by Lord Tully, and will be leaving for Riverrun some time over the next few days. In my absence, you are to prepare the pit and gather the monsters to fight within it. Upon my return, we will discuss this further. I would like to plan the re-opening of the pits in correlation with a grand tournament."

9th Day, 3rd Moon
Seeing as she didn't have a solar of her own and Belric's was most likely to be unoccupied at the time, Dacey led the septon there to receive his message in private. She didn't know if Belric or Saesha would have minded her using the room, nor did she particularly care.
"What was my brother's message?" she inquired again, not bothering to take a seat or offer Jared one, having gotten the impression that the message was urgent.

Jared was a little disconcerted by the lady's lack of social graces, but then again, he knew she wasn't a true lady. Though he dearly longed for a comfortable seat, a tankard of ale and some food.
"My lady, Ser Edmure wished me to inform your uncle that he finds himself in a difficult situation at Armistead's Crossing. Ser Edmure commanded me to advise that, should he not be back within two days, we should assume there is a state of war between the Houses Smallwood and Vance, and also between Blackfort and Piper. Ser Edmure's orders are that your uncle reinforce Atranta with knights and raise the levies. He also wishes word to be sent to Lord Blackfort."
He paused to let his words sink in. "Am I to assume, my lady, that you are acting as castellan in your uncle's stead?"

Dacey studied the man as he spoke. "Hoster is the captain of guard," she said with polished detachment. "I'm acting in my lord brother's stead."
She took a deep breath and paused for thought, remembering her dream rather vividly. "I take it the initial meeting went south. Can you tell me what happened?"

"We found the Piper and Smallwood men abusing the smallfolk," Jared replied. "Naturally, it was our duty to intervene. The smallfolk look to our kind for protection. But a man was killed in the process and now, well, let's say that it was received badly. I have my doubts whether a peaceful resolution can happen. Trouble is, if it were one of our men killed, we'd be duty bound to answer, so I can see why Smallwood and Piper will want compensation. And yet, their crimes against the smallfolk cannot be ignored."

"Absolutely not," she agreed, tapping her fingers against the table next to her. For the sake of their people, she would have preferred a peaceful solution, but... their father was yet to be avenged. There was of course a way to meet both these ends, but Dacey suspected her brother to be too craven for a trial by combat. "Two days, you said. How long was your ride back?" she asked. "Did Edmure say how many men?"

"The journey is about half a day's ride," Jared answered. "As to how many men, we have about a hundred men. Smallwood had..." He thought a moment. "Maybe a score fewer. But they were knights, and most of our people are peasants. If it comes to battle, the advantage is on their side. We'll need more men, certainly."

"Did he say how many more men he needed?" she asked patiently, well aware how big a party Edmure had left with. "If it's half a day's ride, I don't see why I should wait two days for his return. I'll send a rider back immediately to evaluate the situation and start calling the knights."
She moved to the window, thinking as she observed the gloomy view. "Edmure sent a letter to Belric before he left, but he is yet to reply. Either the message got lost or he is being deliberately delayed. I need to send a rider that way as well," she said, turning around to face Jared. "You are already well acquainted with the situation. Will you go?"

Jared silently prayed to the Mother Above to save him from siblings who didn't see eye to eye. It was not, he believed, his place to question Ser Edmure's orders, but he could hardly stop Lady Dacey from doing so. So, when she asked if he would go to Belric, he thought the question a godsend.
"Gladly, my lady. I would be honoured to serve in this manner. As to your first question, I don't believe Ser Edmure requested a particular number of men, so you'd best use your own judgement. But I'll wager we'll need as many knights as you can muster. My guess is that the situation won't be resolved peacefully."

How... useful of Edmure, she thought. "Clearly," she said, having the nagging feeling that Belric would later her give her shit for whichever course of action she was to take next. "You did good, Ser Jared. If that is all, you'd best eat and rest for your next journey. When you see Belric, recount everything Edmure told you and tell him I'm sending down the knights. If he asks, which he no doubt will, tell him Jon and Hoster are both ill."
